English Vinglish narrated the story of a simple middle aged woman who was
dedicated towards her family. Shashi as a woman with no English sorely feels
disadvantaged, even within her own family. Her daughter teases her for her
pronunciation, even her pre-schooler does that. She shies away from parent-
teacher interviews, for her daughter goes to an English-speaking school. No
matter how devoted a wife she tries to be, she feels the gap between herself and
her husband Satish. The changing point comes when Shashi’s niece is getting
married in New York City. She has to go on her own to help her prepare for the
wedding. Her husband and children arrives later for the occasion, not knowing
her secret English lessons. In front of all the guests, Shashi is asked to make a
speech to the newlyweds. While her husband tries to deflect the embarrassment
and excuses her for lack of English, Shashi stands up and uses her new-found
voice to urge the bride and groom to value equality and treat each other with
respect, a heartfelt speech well intended for her husband, and a lesson that
brings tears of remorse to her daughter.
However, her struggle with English often left her in an awkward situation. But
her trip to the United States not just changed her outlook towards life but also
gave her the confidence to overcome her struggle with English.
This movie is an examples of the changing role of woman who does not need a
male to rescue her from danger or to console her in her tears. She is a self-
sufficient woman who does not forget her roots. The movies generate thought-
provoking questions about the status of woman in present India and gender
discrimination among the Indian society.
IF YOU WERE THE WRITER WHAT CHANGES YOU WOULD DO IN
THE FILM:
I felt like the movie touched another very important issue but could have done
better at concluding it rather than leaving it unmentioned altogether in the latter
half. Shashi’s daughter in several instances threw tantrums at Shashi and made
her feel inferior even though Shashi was a supportive and loving mother.
Shashi’s sense of isolation is deepened by Sapna’s remarks. Her daughter’s
character portrays how kids can be so ungrateful of their parents and their
struggles and pick on their weaknesses to prove their point. So I will make
changes in the behaviour of Shashi’s daughter.
The movie feature is most relevant today. It speaks to all whose first language
is not English, who struggle with an inferior complex simply for not knowing
the common language, in particular, to immigrant parents who lack the skills to
communicate with their own children. Furthermore, in the film, Sridevi offers a
powerful voice to the female empowerment movement so prominent today. In
past India women were ignorant of their basic rights mostly because of illiteracy
and economic subordination and were denied access to social equality.
Today, women know that opportunities will not reach their laps. They would
have to determine ways to create them. They are fighting back to rebuild their
prominent position in Indian communities and societies. Now a day, the status
of women in India has greatly improved and there are many women who are
holding high and prestigious position in the government offices and private
companies. The activities of women are in all sides of present day economy in
India. This has proved that, women can be even better than man if they are
given an opportunity. The women should be given equal opportunity like their
male counterparts by the central and state governments of India.
MENTION THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE WHICH AS A TEACHER
WILL PROVIDE TO THE LEARNERS TO BRING CHANGE IN
INDIAN SOCIETY?
Age is just a number- When it comes to learning a new talent, new hobby
or maybe a new language, we often consider age as a barrier. However, I
will teach that one can learn anything at any point of time irrespective of
their age.
Knowing a language and intelligence are different things- In this fast
growing world, getting hold of a widely spoken language is considered to
be a parameter to judge one’s intelligence. However, I will teach that,
knowing a language isn’t synonymous with intellect, rather it is just a
way to communicate.
Self-love is important- I will teach that, it is important to accept your
flaws and love yourself. Feeling good about oneself gives you a different
kind of confidence that helps conquer your flaws. One should understand
his/her value and makes sure people treasure their presence in their
respective life.
