A computer is a dumb machine, which is completely dependent on the user to give it step –wise instructions to
make it work. You need to give instructions to it in the form of a computer program.
 Computer software is the intelligence of the computer.
 A set of computer programs which make the computer work is called software.
Types of Software (depending upon the usage to which it is put):
1. System Software
2. Application Software
3. Utilities
System Software:
The system Software works at the internal level of the computer and instructs the computer how to manage
its resources (Hardware & Software).
An Operating System which is
User The computer
responsible for providing an interface
Example:
1. Operating System (Windows XP, Linux, Unix)
2. Assemblers
3. Compilers
4. Interpreters
Application Software:
 The application Software makes the computer useful for people so that they can use them for
different purpose.
 It helps the user to work more efficiently, faster and more meaningful.
Types of Application Software:
1. General purpose application software (provide the environment to develop custom made software)
Example: MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Access Data Base Management Software, Library
Management System for schools
2. Custom-made application software (the programs developed as per individual needs)
Example: Accounting, Library Management, Fee Collection, Hotel Management Software

Utilities:
 Utility programs performs routine but necessary jobs in a computer system.
 These programs make life easier for a user by doing several routine and important jobs quickly and in an
easy manner. Like:
o Backup of data
o Testing the disk integrity
o Recovering accidentally deleted data
 Common utilities example provided with the Windows Operating System
(For the efficient working of the hard disk and operating system stability)
o Disk Defragmenter
o System Restore
 To open utilities in Windows 7 , use
