Review:
- Extreme Value Theorem

Follow the steps in finding the absolute extrema of the given

function.

STEPS
1. Find the first derivative of the given function.
2. Equate the first derivative of the given function to 0. (To
find the critical number (s).)
3. Substitute the given interval and the critical number (s) to
the given function.
4. Select the maximum by finding the largest value in 3rd step
and the minimum by finding the smallest value in 3rd step.

Guide Questions:
1. How did you find the first derivative of the given
polynomial function?
2. What mathematical skill is essential in finding the critical
number (s)?
3. If you will graph the given function using desmos or any
graphing utility, what can you say about the maximum and
B. Development minimum?

Chain Rule

The Chain Rule is one of the important computational

theorems in calculus, it tells us how to find the derivative of a
composite function.

The Chain Rule can be stated in two ways:

 If the function g is differentiable at x and the function f is

differentiable at then the composite function
is differentiable at x, and

2. If the Leibniz notation is used for the derivative, the chain

rule can be stated as follows:
dy
If y is a function of u, defined by y=f (u) and exists,
du
du
and if u is a function of x, defined by u=g ( x) and exists,
dy
dy
then y is a function of x and exists and is given by
dx

The chain rule involves taking the derivative of the outer

C. Engagement function evaluated at the inner function and multiplying it by
the derivative of the inner function. (In the first statement the
outer function is f and the inner function is g; while in the
second statement the outer function is y and the inner function
is u).

Determine the “outer and “inner” functions, represent them by

y and u, respectively. Then, Calculate the derivative of y with
respect to x.

1 . y =tan 2 (5 x 2 +3)
y=tan 2 (u)
dy 2
=2 tan ( u ) sec (u)

D. Assimilation dx

I. Complete the table by “breaking down” the function into

the “inner” and “outer”. Show your solution.
II. Analyze each item carefully. Show all important
computations.

III. Calculate the derivative of the following.

IV. Find the derivative of the given problem.

A particle is moving along a path defined by where s is

the directed distance of the particle from the origin at t
seconds. Find the velocity v in terms of t.

Recall that the velocity is the derivative of the distance

function.

VI. Reflection  Communicate your personal assessment as indicated in

the Learner’s Assessment Card.
 The learner, in their notebook, will write their personal
insights about the lesson using the prompts below.
I understand that ________________________.
I realize that ____________________________.
I need to learn more about _________________.
