Name: Jamie Suto Date(s) of Lesson: Day 8

Student Learning Objective(s) and Related Assessment(s):

Learning Target: I can participate in a class discussion, applying concepts of

personification, anthropomorphism, and animacy in language to both texts,
“Learning the Grammar of Animacy” and The Island of Missing Trees.

Language Objective (for emergent multilinguals): I can utilize the notes I

filled out on my discussion preparation sheet to add thoughts/textual evidence to
the class discussion.

Standard(s):
• Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text,
including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of
specific word choices on meaning and tone, including words with multiple
meanings or language that is particularly fresh, engaging, or beautiful.
(Include Shakespeare as well as other authors.) (CCSS: RL.11-12.4)
• Come to discussions prepared, having read and researched material under
study; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence from
texts and other research on the topic or issue to stimulate a thoughtful,
well-reasoned exchange of ideas. (CCSS: SL.11-12.1a)

Learning Activities:

Initiation (10 minutes): Class will begin with a chance for students to review their
annotations on “Learning the Grammar of Animacy” and finish filling out their
Discussion Preparation sheet (10 minutes)
• In addition, students will utilize this time to write a question for the
fishbowl discussion, generating a question surrounding
personification/anthropomorphism/animacy in language as it relates to
“Learning the Grammar of Animacy” and The Island of Missing Trees
o Teacher will collect questions and organize for discussion (10
minutes)

Lesson Development: Following the initiation, students will participate in a

fishbowl discussion on the concepts relating to “Learning the Grammar of
Animacy,” and The Island of Missing Trees (45 minutes)
• Students will use their annotations from the reading, their book, as well as
the Discussion Preparation sheet as a starting point for answers
• All students will be expected to speak at least 2 times and, after students
have all spoken twice, students who have already met this expectation will
have a chance to share more

Closure: Debrief fishbowl discussion with a chance to share main takeaways as a

whole class (20 minutes)
• After closing the fishbowl discussion, students will do a quick-write as their
ticket out the door, explaining something from the discussion that pushed
their thinking around the concepts of personification, anthropomorphism,
and animacy in language (10 minutes)
• Students will have a chance to share out with the whole class their main
takeaways (10 minutes)

Modifications: The Discussion
Preparation
sheet is
designed to
scaffold
learning, and
allow students
who may not be
as comfortable
sharing their
thoughts a
doorway into
the discussion,
as they are able
to prepare their
thoughts before
discussion
begins
Extensions: After all
students have
shared at least 2
times, students
who have more
to share have an
opportunity to
share more than
twice
