Lesson Topic: DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF

ACADEMIC WRITING

This lesson will guide you on how to distinguish the features of

academic writing as well as how it differs from literary writing.

Literary writing uses images and descriptions. Oftentimes, it is subjective

and less formal. It uses words that appeal to emotion. Descriptive essays,

narratives, stories, fiction, nonfiction, manuscripts, and poetry written

creatively are examples of this. On the other hand, academic writing uses

words which are formal, standard and impersonal. Persuasive and

informative essays, and research papers are examples of this.

Students, professors, and researchers in every discipline use

academic writing to convey ideas, make arguments, and engage in scholarly

conversation. Academic writing is characterized by evidence-based

arguments, precise word choice, logical organization, and an impersonal

tone. Though sometimes thought of as long-winded or inaccessible, strong

academic writing is quite the opposite: It informs, analyzes, and persuades

in a straightforward manner and enables the reader to engage critically in a

scholarly dialogue.

What’s New

Academic writing is important especially to high school students

like you. Writing is the primary basis upon which one's work, learning, and

intellect will be judged—in college, in the workplace and in the community.

Writing equips us with communication and thinking skills. Writing

expresses who we are as people. Writing makes our thinking and learning

visible and permanent.

The purpose of academic writing, as with most other kinds of writing,

is to communicate. For you, as a student, your writing is the marker's only

window to your thoughts. Therefore, it is important that you learn how best

to write in a way which will convince the marker that you understand what

you are talking about.

Features of academic writing

1. Complexity (Kompleksidad)

Written language is relatively more complex than spoken

language. Written language has longer words, it is lexically denser,

and it has a more varied vocabulary. It uses more noun-based phrases

than verb-based phrases. Written texts are shorter, and the language

9
has more grammatical complexity, including more subordinate

clauses and more passives.

2. Formality (Pormalidad)

Academic writing is relatively formal. In general, this means that in

an essay you should avoid colloquial words and expressions.

3. Precision (Katiyakan)

In academic writing, facts and figures are given precisely.

4. Objectivity (Kawalang- kinikilingan)

Written language is in general objective rather than personal. It

therefore has fewer words that refer to the writer or the reader. This

means that the main emphasis should be on the information that you

want to give and the arguments you want to make, rather than you. For

that reason, academic writing tends to use nouns (and adjectives), rather

than verbs (and adverbs).

5. Explicitness (Kalinawan)

Academic writing is explicit about the relationships int he text.

Furthermore, it is the responsibility of the writer in English to make it

clear to the reader how the various parts of the text are related. These

connections can be made explicit by the use of different signaling words.

6. Accuracy (Kawastuhan)

Academic writing uses vocabulary accurately. Most subjects have

words with narrow specific meanings. Linguistics distinguishes clearly

between "phonetics" and "phonemics"; general English does not.

10
7. Hedging (Pag iwas sa Katanungan)

In any kind of academic writing you do, it is necessary to make

decisions about your stance on a particular subject, or the strength of

the claims you are making. Different subjects prefer to do this in different

ways.

A technique common in certain kinds of academic writing is known

by linguists as a ‘hedge’.

8. Responsibility (Responsibilidad)

In academic writing you must be responsible for and must be able

to provide evidence and justification for, any claims you make. You are

also responsible for demonstrating an understanding of any source texts

you use.

9. Organization (Pagkakabuo)

Academic writing is well organized. It flows easily from one section

to the next in a logical fashion. A good place to start is the genre of your

text. Once you have decided on the genre, the structure is easily

determined.

10. Planning (Balangkas)

Academic writing is well planned. It usually takes place after research and

evaluation, according to a specific purpose and plan.

11
Here are examples of academic writing :

 Books and book reports

 A book report is a formal essay discussing the contents of a

book. It summarizes the important aspects of a book such as

the title, author, plot, and characters while showing that a

student understands what he or she has read.

Book Report Example

In Contempt Book Report
Book Written by Chris Darden
This report is based upon the book In Contempt, written by Christhopher A.
Darden with Jess
Walter. This book is published by Regan Books an imprint of Harper Collins
Publishers and is
copyrighted 1996 by Christopher A. Darden.

Introduction of the Author

The book In Contempt was written by Christopher A. Darden. Chris Darden is
famous for being one of the prosecuting attorneys in the court case The People vs.
Simpson. He has worked hard his whole life to reach the status he has now
achieved. He proved to America that even though he wasn't a high-priced private
lawyer that he could present a well-thought out and planned case under the
tremendous pressure he and the other prosecutors had to endure during the
Simpson case.
Summary
I found this book to be very well thought out and well written. Most people would
assume that this book was written with the intentions of making a quick-buck off
the misfortune of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. I, however, do not
believe this to be true. The way that the author speaks of the victims in the book
and the way he spoke of them before and after the trial shows that he really cared
about the lives of these people that he didn't even know. He even went as far as to
say in the book that this was the first case that affected him personally and
emotionally.

12
 Essays (persuasive, analytical, critical and expository)

 An essay is a "short formal piece of writing.. dealing with a

single subject" ("Essay," 2001). It is typically written to try to

persuade the reader using selected research evidence ("Essay,"

1997).

My Mother, My Strength!

My mother always reminds me of freshly baked breads. The feeling

is so warm with a sweet fragrance. And I cannot help being drawn over
just like a newly born baby. Despite this, the feeling I have for my mom is
ever changing. She is like a rose, so tough and so beautiful. She teaches
me all that she knows in what she thinks is the most appropriate time
and way, raising me up to be a mature, sensible and strong-minded girl.

As I grew up, I became curious about child-bearing. I learned from

books and movies that the process was very painful. Then I asked my
mom whether she felt pains when she gave birth to me. Her face cutely
turned red and said 'not at all' with blinking eyes. She told me that she
was willing to bear the pains to have a lovely daughter like me. I was so

moved that I could never forget her gentle, loving face.

13
 Research paper or research article

 It includes some key parts of the paper such as the abstract,

introduction, discussion, and references.

THE SCIENTIFIC FORMAT: A RESEARCH PAPER OUTLINE:

Page 1:Title, Author, Work/School

Page 2:Abstract: A short summary of the article.

Page 3-:Introduction

Current theories about the topic. What are the hypothesis for the paper?

Methods: What method used.

Results: What were the results obtained?

Discussion and Conclusion: What are our thought about the results compared to other
relevant theories.

References: Through the text there are references, sources of knowledge, which you've
used. Citing those will give you more credibility because good research is thought to be
based on other knowledge and empirical (observed) evidence.

 Conference paper

 Conference papers refer to articles that are written with the goal

of being accepted to a conference: typically an annual (or

biannual) venue with a specific scope where you can present

your results to the community, usually as an oral presentation,

a poster presentation, or a tabled discussion.

 Academic journal

 Scholarly/Academic Journal: A type of periodical that

includes original research articles written by researchers and

experts in a particular academic discipline, providing a

forum for the production and critique of knowledge.

An academic paper has three distinct sections - the introduction, body and

conclusion:

 INTRODUCTION: In the introduction, you must grab the reader's

attention and identify the thesis of the paper. You can do this by

starting with:

 Several questions

 A quote from a famous work or person

 Some interesting facts or information

 A definition of an important term related to the work

15
 BODY: This is the main part of the work and the paragraphs must be

clearly written and be arranged in a logical order, like chronologically

or in order of importance. Each initial sentence links the preceding

paragraph and the whole section flows smoothly.

Within each paragraph, the sentences need to flow and refer back to

the topic. Cohesion is achieved by repeating important words, using

synonyms for the main subject, and using transitional words like:

however, such as, therefore, and for example.

 CONCLUSION: In the conclusion, you re-emphasize the thesis and

summarize all the main points. The conclusion consists of one

paragraph which shows the final conclusion to the reader.
