SET 1 For Odd Id Numbers

This document contains a mid-semester exam for a fluid mechanics course taken by mechanical engineering students. The exam contains 6 questions related to fluid mechanics concepts like pressure, flow rate, buoyancy, and torque. Students are provided figures to reference for questions involving systems like dams, beams, sinks, and sprinklers. They are asked to calculate values like height, minimum depth, angle of floatation, fill time, drain rate, horizontal force, rotational speed, and holding torque.

COURSE (ME2007T) FLUID MECHANICS (SET 1)
Note:
1. All questions are compulsory
2. All questions carry equal marks

Q.1 At 200 C gauge A reads 250 kPa (g). what is the height h of the water in cm? what
should gauge B read in kPa (g)? (refer Fig. 1)

Q.2 A rectangular gate will open automatically when the depth of water, d, becomes large
enough. What is the minimum depth (d) that will cause the gate to open? (refer Fig. 2)

Q.3 A uniform wooden beam (SG = 0.70) is 10 cm by 10 cm by 3 m and is hinged at A, as

in Fig. 3. At what angle θ will the beam float in the water?

Q.4 In your kitchen, the sink is 60 cm by 45 cm by 30 cm by 12 cm deep. You are filling it
with water at the rate of 15 lpm.How long will it take (in min) to half fill the sink? After
this you turn off the faucet (tap) and open the drain slightly so that the tank starts to
drain at 4 lpm. What is the rate (mm/min) at which the water level drops?

Q.5 Water flows steadily through the nozzle shown, discharging to atmosphere. Calculate
the horizontal component of force in the flanged joint. Indicate whether the joint is in
tension or compression (refer Fig. 4)

Q.6 A horizontal lawn sprinkler in Fig. 5 has a water flow rate of 15 lpm introduced vertically
through the center. Estimate
a) The rotational speed (rpm) of the sprinkler considering frictionless pivot
b) The torque required to hold the sprinkler stationary
