Abstract
As the world grows, the demand for resources drastically increases. With more intensive
research, and applying the proper use of genetically modified organisms, that could positively
affect the demand for products. Although genetically modified organisms are seen as bad by
millions, they have the potential to provide great benefits to the world as a whole. Present use of
GMOs have already tremendously helped in many cases by saving farms even preventing several
species from facing extinction. The drawbacks of genetically modified organisms can also be
adapted to and or fixed to fit the needs of everyone through further technological advancements.
3
Millions of manufacturers and farmers across the globe have adopted the use of
genetically modified organisms in their crops and products over the last twenty five years; but
what do they do exactly? Genetically modified organisms aren’t all exactly what they seem to be.
GMOs have a stigma behind them, that they are unhealthy, filled with pesticides, bad for the
environment, and hurt the economy when in reality, this is only sometimes the case. If used
correctly, genetically modified organisms can help advance the future, provide more resources,
allow greater value for farmers, and the use of genetically modified plants and organisms will be
The growth of the world's population is expected to increase up to nine billion people by
the year 2050; and in order to accommodate for the drastic change, it is said that global food
production will have to grow by seventy percent. In order to provide for the growth of the human
population, the use of GMOs will be essential in everyday life. Genetically modified foods allow
farmers to produce more products and crops with less work and effort making agronomy easier.
Not only do GMOs improve agronomy drastically, they also allow researchers to create more
nutritious foods including more vitamins. The use of genetically modified organisms will be
better for the overall economy and the betterment of the people.
In many cases, the use of GMOs has been the only option and reason for farmers staying
in business. Genetically modified crops have also saved several species of plants which have
faced extinction due to their environment. In Hawaii, farmers were facing agricultural issues
regarding the papaya plant and their growth. Insects carrying the papaya ringspot virus would
infect the trees which grew the fruit with only a single bite, causing farmers to cut down entire
trees and even relocate their plantation. With the introduction of genetically modified seeds,
4
genetic engineers created a new species of papaya’s which were able to combat the ringspot virus
and continue growing the fruit as normal, thus saving the epidemic. With further research and the
evolution of biotechnology, genetic engineers could improve current GMOs and even create
On the other hand, there has been a growing concern on the effect genetically modified
foods have on human health. Researchers say that not enough testing and data has been able to
tell what long term effects GMOs could have on the body, and if they’re safe. The creation of
stronger species of foods that resist insects has also caused pests to evolve and become resistant
to our scientific advancements. It is also said that the use of GMOs do not help with the problem
of global hunger, that our current food situation is efficient to feed the world. The matter is that
we cannot transport and use our foods in the right way to provide for all. These things could be
entirely true but adjustments can be made to combat these deformities. Genetically modified
foods have been in circulation for over two and a half decades which is longer than many people
have lived and there has not been any scientific research showing differences between the older
generation, and the generation which was introduced to GMOs. The issue regarding super pests
could be an ongoing issue potentially starting a cycle of having to create resistant species of
Overall, these issues have aspects which can be fixed overtime through more intensive
genetic engineering, and research. The creation of a device that detects GMOs inside of foods
could help with the natural and organic aspect for those that choose to refuse GMOs.
