Welcome to the Descriptive Quantification subject at level three of the Bachelor
od Construction Degree.

SUBJECT LEARNER GUIDE:

The document is to assist you to become an independent learner, which is a

 The subject Descriptive Quantification III develops you more on the
concepts and skills, which have been introduced to you at the past two levels
in Descriptive Quantification I and II

At completion of this Degree course work opportunities exist in the:-
 Private Building Contractors;
 Professional Project Management Practices;
 Quantity Surveying Practices;
 Municipalities;
 Insurance Companies;

INTRODUCTION
SUBJECT AIM:
The aim of this subject is to enable you (the student):-

 To become conversant (familiar) with the principles, processes, and the


methods of measurement and the documentation of builders’ work.
 To become proficient (capable) at measuring (taking off) and describing the
main elements of a multi-storey building.

INTRODUCTION
Besides this you will be taught to perform the following:
To carry out practical working up exercises which include squaring,
abstracting, and compilation of bills of quantities.
To value construction work in progress and make recommendations as to
payment to the contractor.
To calculate escalations based on the Haylett formula.
To make adjustments of prime cost and provisional sums for cash discounts
and also for inclusion in the final account.

NB:
This subject forms one of the three major subjects within the level three of the
Bachelor of Construction degree

 Collaborative Learning.

INTRODUCTION
COURSE STRUCTURE:
 The following modules form the core of the syllabus.
 The expanded syllabus is available for scrutiny in the learner guide and is
held in the academic records of the Department.
1. Measurement and description of the following elements of multi-storey
buildings:
 Mensuration.
Bulk Earthworks and site clearance.
Load bearing and framed concrete and brick structures.
Flat roofs comprising waterproofing to concrete roofs and sheet metal covering
and boarded roof.
Staircases including balustrade walls, balustrading and finishes.

INTRODUCTION
Structural steelwork.
Purpose made timber and aluminium windows and doors including sidelights,
fanlights, and adjustments.
PC and provisional sums including final account adjustments and builder’s work in
connection with specialist installations.

 Practical working up and compilation of Bills of Quantities complete with


trade preambles.
Builders’ Quantities
Valuations and progress payments including basic principles of escalation.

INTRODUCTION
EQUIPMENT:
Any scientific calculator with a memory and square root sign.

Metric Scales, preferably triangular in shape which include the following:


1 : 5; 1 : 10; 1 : 20; 1 : 25; 1 : 50; 1 : 100; 1 : 200; 1 : 500.

A set of twelve coloured pencil crayons.

INTRODUCTION
TESTS AND ASSIGNMENTS:

 Class marks are obtained from tutorials, assignments and class tests completed
by students which count for 40% of the total year mark.
 Progress tests will be conducted periodically and may consist of both theory and
calculation tests.

EXAMINATIONS:

 40% or 16/40 is required as a class mark from the student to be allowed to write the
examination.
 80% attendance is required from the student to be able to write the examination.
 The examination will consist of a 4 hour exam covering the whole course syllabus.
