their unique cultural community.)
Tell: Very good class! The lines, figure, drawings, and how they execute it represent their own
cultural community , and also do not forgot their materials because it also contribute to the
representation of their own cultural community.
For example the ivatan and t’bolli.
For ivatan their costume is called “Vakul” a eco-wearable made from plant materials such as
grass is the "Vakul", a traditional headdress of the Ivatan ( inhabitants of Batanes, the
northernmost islands province of the Philippines). However, unlike the ephemeral "weedrobes"
made from plant materials, the vakul is a functional creation meant as a protective gear from
nature's elements like sun and rain. Abaca fibers and cogon grass are the typical plant materials
woven to create this quaint eco-friendly wearable.
For badajo, their traditional attire of a Badjao is the “patadjong.” It has many uses. They are
made large enough to fit any person and are used by both men and women as a skirt or gown
tucked at the chest level. It can serve as head cover, waistband, sash, blanket, hammock,
shoulder bag, cradle, pouch, hood, or pillow. The women’s “sablay” is a loosed sleeved blouse
reaching down to the hips. “Patadjong” is handwoven fabric made of cotton and silk.
