CHAPTER 1
Introduction
The novel coronavirus infection known as COVID-19 first appeared in December 2019 at
Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan, China (Wikipedia, 2020), and within a few months it had
evolved into a global health emergency (Wikipedia, 2020). It has quickly touched thousands of
individuals, who are sick or dying as a result of the disease's spread. The COVID-19 epidemic
also caused considerable disruption, including travel restrictions, school closures, and a global
economic downturn.
To limit the spread of the virus and prevent infections, most countries have temporarily closed
their educational institutions (Tria, 2020). Within the school, face-to-face involvement of pupils
and teachers has also been suspended. The Philippines is currently transitioning to a new normal
type of education, and educators' constant innovations and active participation from other
stakeholders are the driving forces behind its success. The Department of Education
implemented Blended and Modular Learning to ensure the continuity of education and for each
school to continue to achieve its objective and vision, which is to deliver quality education to
every Filipino learner.
Colegio De San Jose was one of the first schools in Iloilo City to open its virtual door to the
students who wished to continue their education through the new normal educational modalities.
Colegio De San Jose offers flexible learning modalities -- the blended learning modalities, online
learning modality, and the modular learning modality.
The most common sort of distance learning is modular learning. Learning through printed and
digital modules emerged as the most favored distance learning mode of parents with children
who are enrolled this academic year, according to a survey done by the Department of Education
(DepEd) (Bernardo, J). This also takes into account learners in remote areas in Iloilo who do not
have access to the internet and hence cannot participate in online learning.
Because of this new learning modality, the teacher is responsible for designing the modules for
their lessons and keeping track of the students' progress. The teacher can be contacted by the
students via e-mail, phone, text message, or instant messaging, among other methods. Parents
and guardians of lower-grade children, as well as students in higher-grade levels, will be able to
obtain printed modules from the Integrated Basic Education Department office of Colegio De
San Jose. Because education is no longer confined to the classroom, parents play an important
role in the education of their children.
Blended learning is not an afterthought; it has a strong theoretical foundation. In addition to the
theoretical foundations of constructivism and other learning theories, Merrill's initial principles
of instruction also give rise to blended learning.
The teachers who are responsible for the students' learning, they are the one who are responsible
for marking the modules of the students. Each week when the students submit their
accomplished modules, the teachers mark them manually. In which the researchers observed that
it takes a lot of time marking the piles of modules each week. This took a challenge to some
teachers, in which marking of the modules took more time than their other tasks as a teacher.
The key purpose of this study is to find out the challenges encountered by the teachers to be
efficient in checking the self learning kit of the students in Modular Learning of Colegio de San
Jose.

Paradigm of the Research Study
This study seeks to know the efficiency of the teachers of colegio de san jose in manually
checking the self learning modules of the students in the modular learning modality.
Specifically, the study will answer the following queries:
1. How much time does a teacher spend in a week manually checking the modules of their
students?
2. What are the efficient ways of the teachers to manually check the modules of the
students?
This study was undertaken to determine the efficiency of the teachers of Colegio De San Jose in
manually checking the self learning kit or modules of the students in the modular learning
modality during the school year 2021-2022. There will be randomly selected teachers and most
of them are in the Integrated Basic Education Department (IBED).
Conceptual Framework
The researchers believe that the findings of this study will benefit the following:
Teachers. They may find the results of the study to be useful and to become more
efficient in checking the modules of their students. This could help them to allot more time in
their other responsibilities as a teacher.
Students. They may receive their modules in a short period of time after submitting their
modules.
School Administrators. They may find the results of this study to make changes in the
ways of checking the modules of the students.
