CONSTANTINOPLE

CONSTANTINE
Roman Emperor (diocletians successor) who ordered to built a huge, new city in 330 wich
became the capital of the Roman Eastern Empire.
The Roman Eastern Empire became the Byzantium empire and by this moment the capital
changed its name in honor to his fundator to constantinople.

LOCATION
It was in a very profitable location; one’s of the most important advantages where:
1. It was surrounded by wáter, meaning it was easier to defend
2. It was pretty close to the central point of the empire
3. It had an exellent point for harbor (because of the Golden horn)
4. Easy access to the Danube river region and the Euphrates frontier
ORGANIZATION/ INFRASTRUCTURE
Was inspired in the Christian god, but with his own classical way. It was built in 7 hills and
divided in 14 districts. It was full of statues not only of his founder (who was dressed as
apollo) but of Caesar, Alexander the Great, and others… The city also centered on two
colonnaded streets, wich where marked by the tetraphylon there we could have found
the library in the north arch, and the Chalke Gate (massive entrance to the city) in the
south part… The city maked many transformations that finally marked the importance and
the richness of the modern aged city.
Problems in the providing of water where faced because of the intense drought’s in
summer and autom and altought aqueducts and tunnels to bring wáter existed there was
still a lack for some of the citizens. This was solved with the Binbirderek Cistern
constructed in 330.

RELIGION/CULTURE
Religion took importance and a different meaning, Constantine constantly supported
christianity and altought people doubted whether he converted or not, Constatinople
became the point where the greek classics and Christian ideals focused and “developed”
Many Christian churches and temples where build up, one of the most important was
named Hagia Irene. Later in middle ages it becomes the keeper or ancient Roman and
Greek texts.

WITHIN BYZANTINE EMPIRE

This city was considered Christendom and was the richest city in the world for more than
5 centuries not only in the economical aspect but in the religious relics too. Was one of
biggest cities in the world.
Famous for his gold objects, gorgeous purple cloth and his assorted products wich where
brought from the silk roads (china, india, africa) this helped the byzantine empire to
finance trade and a grew of wealthy taxes the empire collected from the high standariced
families. The arts and architecture prospered; due to this the great chain across the
Golden horn repeled the attacks and invations from Huns, Slaves; Goths and others.
