__________ 5. Which of the following must pass through the center of the circle?
a. chord b. diameter c. edge d. point

Introduction of the Topic:

This lesson presents the circumference of a circle. Circle is a closed plane figure
that has no straight sides. It is made up of points that are at a fixed distance from a fixed
point. The fixed point is known as the center of the circle. The fixed distance is called the
radius of the circle. A diameter is a chord that passes through the center of the circle and
that circumference of a circle is the distance around the circle.
You can measure the circumference of any circular object by using a ruler or a
tape measure. We can find the circumference using either the diameter or radius of a
circle. If using the diameter, the formula is simply this: C = πd. In this equation, "C"
represents the circumference of the circle, and "d" represents its diameter and π (pi) is

3.14. That is to say, you can find the circumference of a circle just by multiplying the
diameter by pi. If finding the circumference of a circle using the radius (the radius is half
of the diameter, so the diameter can be thought of as 2r, the formula for finding the
circumference of a circle given the radius is C = 2πr. In this formula, "r" represents the
radius of the circle.

Lesson 1: Visualizing the circumference of a circle

A dog scratching on a ground is tied with a rope whose end is attached to a
lumber on the ground. If the rope is 20 m long, how long is the farthest path that the
dog can make around the lumber?

The path that the dog can make around the lumber is circle. The farthest path
that the dog can make around the lumber is called circumference of a circle. Hence,
the circumference of a circle is the distance around the circle.

Draw a circle on an art paper. Cut out the circle and paste it on a bond paper.
Then draw dots around it and count how many dots were you able to count. Counting
the dots around the circle also shows circumference of a circle. How many dots are
around the circle below? What is the circumference of the circle?

Lesson 2: Measuring the circumference of a circle using

appropriate tools.

Do you have any of the following objects in your home? Do you know
that you can use any of them to measure circumference of a circle?

MATH 5 QUARTER 3 WEEK 8 3

You can measure the circumference of any circular object by using a ruler or a tape
measure. We can find the circumference of a circle by measuring the radius or the
diameter of any circle.

Raleigh was listening to the music of Sarah Geronimo from a compact disc. Then she
remembered their assignment in Math to submit cut-out circle from an art paper
that is of the same size as of a compact disc, then measure the diameter using a
ruler and write the measurement on the circle. How did she measure the cd’s
diameter?

What is the diameter of the compact disc? The diameter of the compact disc is
_______ centimeters. What is its circumference?

While preparing to come to class, she looked at the time on the wall clock. She also
decided to measure the side of it using tape measure.

What could be the measure around the clock? The circumference of the clock is _____
centimeters.
Look at the following objects. Can you measure the following using ruler or tape
measure to find its circumference?

1) 2) 3) 4) 5)
Dartboard weighing scale can of sardines battery led light

Lesson 3: Finding the circumference of a circle.

Calculating the circumference of a circle involves a constant called pi with the
symbol π. Pi (π) is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Pi is
always the same number for any circle. The value of π (pi) is approximately
3.14159265358979323846... but usually rounding to 3.14 should be sufficient.

The formula for the circumference of a circle is

C = πd or C = 2πr where
C is the circumference,
d is the diameter and

MATH 5 QUARTER 3 WEEK 8 4

r is the radius.
(π) is 3.14
If you are given the diameter then use the formula C = πd
If you are given the radius then use the formula C = 2πr

Find the Circumference

Find the Circumference
Given the Radius
Given the Diameter

Let us solve for the circumference of the

compact disc that Raleigh measured. The diameter of the compact disc is 12 cm.

To find the circumference: if diameter is given: if the given is radius:

A. Write formula. C = π x d C = 2xπxr

B. Substitute. C = 3.14 x 12 cm C = 2 x 3.14 x 6 cm

C. Multiply. C = 3.14 x 12 cm C = 2 x 3.14 x 6 cm

C = 37.68 cm C = 37.68 cm

Activities

Activity 1. Read the directions carefully. Answer the questions that follow.
Using a cd, draw a circle on any type of paper. Cut the circle. Fold the circle into
two and fold it again. Open the circle. Look at the point at the center of the circle
and observe the lines that is seen on the circle.

Remember

● The circumference of a circle is the distance around the outside of the

circle.
● There are two other important distances on a circle: radius (r) and
the diameter (d).
● The radius, the diameter, and the circumference are the three defining
aspects of every circle.
● Given the radius or diameter and pi you can calculate the
circumference.
● The diameter is the distance from one side of the circle to the other at
its widest points. The diameter will always pass through the center of
the circle.
● The radius is half of this distance. You can also think of the radius as
the distance between the center of the circle and its edge.
● The formula for the circumference of a circle is
C = πd or C = 2πr

where
C is the circumference,
d is the diameter and
r is the radius.
(π) is 3.14
