Psyc 1010 Assignment

This document contains sample responses to various questions about research methods and experimental design. It discusses key concepts like independent and dependent variables, control and experimental groups, random assignment, confounding variables, and correlations. For one question, it provides examples of variables that could result in positive or negative correlations between an energy drink and student performance.

TA SECTION

1B : The dependent variable, or factor, that researchers expect to change as a function of change

in the independent variable. Also a limitation of the laboratory experiment is that ensuring its

ecological validity is often difficult, since the researchers control many variables.

1C: Control group is the group that is not exposed to the treatment, which is basically the

independent variable. Whereas In a formal experiment, the group that is exposed to the treatment

is the experimental group which is also the independent variable.

1D: A placebo effect is a response to a fake treatment. This response can be positive or negative

depending upon the treatment.

1E: One control procedure that we can use is the energy drink which is an independent variable ,

that can be manipulated by us. Thus, the amount of the drink has to be kept constant amongst all

participants of the study to ensure that all the participants are getting the same amount of

variable.

1F: Random assignment is a technique by which researchers assign individuals randomly to

either an experiment or a control group. Therefore, in this experiment, we would randomly

assign the percentage of energy drinks. For example, we will have three groups of people and we

will be given the different amounts of Blast . For example ; one group will be given 40% ,

second group will be given 60% and the third group will given 80%. Based on these results, we

can test our hypothesis of the effects of three different amounts of blast.
1G: Confounding variable is also known as the third variable that can affect the relation between

the independent variable and the dependent variable. For example, rate of metabolism and teh

gender can influence the result of the experiment.

1H: Double-blind procedure is a type of experimental procedure, for example, in which both the

participant and the coordinator are ignorant/blind to the group that the participant is in. Therefore

it would make it impossible for the participant to know whether he/she is receiving the treatment.

In this case, it is not necessary to use this procedure since it does not involve any drug

evaluation.

1I: The conclusion would be how the different amount of energy drink ( Blast) exhibit the

effecs on the consupmtion of participantson of participants.

2A: Since there is insufficient data to determine whether the correlation is positive or negative,

there is no correlation between BLAST and intelligence as there are no mutual aspects shared

between the two.

2B: Taking this situation in to consideration, (give example)

2C: One variable that would likely result in a positive correlation would be that students would

experience less fatigue with the consumption of BLAST which would enable them to function

effectively.

2D: One variable that would likely result in a negative correlation would be that students would

experience hyperactivity with the consumption of BLAST which would affect your cognitive

ability.
2E: They are negatively correlated since the correlation coefficient is r=-.86 which is close to r=

-1.00.

2F:
3:
4A: I do not agree with Harvey’s statement because genetics may affect Waldo’s academic

performance, but the environment also plays about the same role.

4B: Twin studies show a higher correlation between identical twins in IQ than between fraternal

twins. This holds true even when identical twins reared apart are compared to fraternal twins

reared together. Whereas Adoption studies show that adopted children somewhat resemble their

biological parents in intelligence.

4C: For test construction , Harvey would need his mental age and his chronological age and then

with the help of intelligent quotient , he would place these values into the formula.
