DIGITAL ASSIGNMENT 1
1. Heat is generated uniformly by chemical reaction in a sphere of radius 40 mm.
The conductivity of the material is 6.5 W/m-K. If the allowed temperature difference between the surface and the center is 246°C, determine the heat generation rate. If the surface temperature is 150°C and if a fluid at 100°C is used to collect the heat, determine the required value of convection coefficient.
2. A sphere of 210 mm diameter (made of cast iron) initially at uniform
temperature of 4100C is quenched into oil. The oil bath temperature is 50 0C. If the temperature of sphere is 1100C after 5 minutes, find heat transfer coefficient on the surface of the sphere. Neglect internal thermal resistance. Take: Cp (cast iron) = 0.32 kJ/kg0C; density (cast iron) = 7000 kg/m3
3. Superheated steam flows through a MS pipe of diameter 100 mm at a
temperature of 250oC. To avoid heat loss from the steam to the environment which is at 25oC, two layers of thermal insulation material is provided. The 1 st layer is made from rock-wool material of thickness 25 mm and thermal conductivity 0.92 W/m-K whereas 2nd layer is made from ceramic insulation of thickness 30 mm and thermal conductivity 4 W/m-K. If the thermal contact resistance between MS pipe and rock- wool insulation is 5 m2-K/W while between rook-wool and ceramic insulation is 1 m2-K/W, then calculate a) Rate of heat loss from the steam per unit length b) Temperature of rock-wool and ceramic layer interface. Also, sketch the temperature distribution of the composite cylindrical system Consider the steam side and ambient side heat transfer coefficient to be 50 W/m2-K and 5 W/m2-K respectively.
4. An IC engine cylinder wall initially at 25°C is exposed to gases at 800°C with
a convective heat transfer coefficient of 35 W/m2K. The thermal diffusivity of the material is 1.66 × 10–5 m2/s. The thermal conductivity of the material is 57 W/mK. Determine the temperatures at 1 cm cylinder depth and also 5 cm cylinder depth after 20 seconds. Also estimate the instantaneous heat transfer rate at the specified points for the given time. Consider the cylinder wall as a plane wall. 5. Vertical plate heaters are used to heat milk in a tank. The plates are 0.2 m wide and 0.6 m long and the surface is at 90°C. The milk is at 30°C. Determine the value of average convective heat transfer coefficient for the following positions.
(i) 0.2 m side vertical (ii) 0.6 m side vertical (iii) horizontal, both sides heated (iv) plates with 0.6 m side inclined at 30° with vertical.
Assume properties of water for the milk.
6. Cans of tomato sauce are to be cooled in a refrigerator. The cans are
cylindrical and 20 cm in length and 15 cm in diameter. The can surface is at 30°C and the air in the refrigerated space is at 10°C. Two alternate stacking are possible-namely vertical stacking and horizontal stacking. Determine the method that will be better. Neglect cooling on the end surfaces.
