Brick is a building material used in masonry construction made of clay, sand, and lime or concrete materials. Bricks are laid together with mortar in brick masonry walls. The oldest discovered bricks date before 7500 BC in Mesopotamia. Modern modular bricks measure approximately 200x100x100mm while non-modular bricks measure around 225x111x70mm. Different bonds like English, Flemish, and Rat Trap are used to lay bricks in walls for strength and appearance. Rat Trap bond creates a cavity in the wall while maintaining thickness and is suitable for low-cost and thermally efficient construction.

A BRICK IS BUILDING MATERIAL USED TO MAKE WALLS, PAVEMENTS AND OTHER ELEMENTS

IN MASONRY CONSTRUCTION. THE TERM BRICK REFERRED TO DENOTE RECTANGULAR UNITS MADE OF CLAY-
BEARING SOIL, SAND, AND LIME, OR CONCRETE MATERIALS.

LAYING OF BRICKS BONDED TOGETHER WITH MORTAR IS KNOWN AS BRICK MASONRY.

The oldest discovered bricks, originally

made from shaped mud and dating
before 7500 BC, were found at Tell
100mm Aswad, in the upper Tigris region.

Rat Trap Bond is a modular type of
brick masonry bond in which the
bricks are laid in a vertical position
which creates a cavity in the
wall while assuring the same wall
thickness as in the case of the normal
brick masonry wall. It is also known as
a Chinese brick bond.

It can be utilized for low-cost

construction because of the number of
bricks and similarly the volume of
mortar needed to establish the wall
lessens.
It is utilized for buildings where
thermal comfort is to be managed.
It can be also utilized for low load-
bearing walls up to three stories.
The bricks are placed in a vertical direction so that the 110 mm face is
seen from the front elevation, rather than the 75mm face.

The rat-trap bond was invented and

popularized by architect Laurie Baker.
