RURAL DANCE
Bakya salakot
The dance is performed by both males and females, or sometimes by females
only. Women and girls wear a local Balintawak costume and a pair of wooden
slippers known as bakya. The dance's origin in folk music and art makes it a treasured
custom in the countryside regions as well as in modern cities.
Sayaw sa Bangko

Sayaw sa Bangko is a famous Pilipino folk dance in which the dancers must use good

Ancestral dance. Dancers showcase their skills as they dance atop a narrow bench,
while constantly trading places. As opposed to competing with each other to stay on
the bench, dancers must complement each other to ensure that they do not fall.
BULAKLAKAN
The name Bulaklakan originates from the numerous flowers that grow in the area
of Bulacan. The dance is dedicated to the Virgin Mary performed widely in the month of
May as part of the celebration of their holy week.
SPANISH INFLUENCE DANCE
Pandanggo is a Philippine folk dance which has become popular in the rural areas of the
Philippines. The dance evolved from Fandango, a Spanish folk dance, which arrived in the
Philippines during the Hispanic period. This dance of lights simulates fireflies in the night by
balancing lighted cups.
Lanceros, a traditional dance from our "Bailes de Salon" (Ballroom Dances), came to
Puerto Rico via Spain in the second half of the 19th century. It was a popular dance in the
salons of elite, agricultural landowners (hacendados) with cultural ties to Spain.
Rigodon de Honor focuses on prestige and the status of life. This is a
dance with sophistication and etiquette. This is performed during a
grand jubilee. Each pair of participants wears their
best barongs and ternos trying to be as the most dashing of the field.
The cariñosa is a Philippine dance of colonial-era origin from the Maria Clara suite of Philippine folk
dances, where the fan or handkerchief plays an instrumental role as it places the couple in a
romance scenario.
Kuratsa is a dance of flirtation and courtship, designed to be danced with a partner. Its
movements mimic the mating ritual of a rooster and hen. Alcedo said that different versions of
the dance could be found in north and central Philippines.
MINDANAO DANCE
Singkíl is a folk dance of the Maranao people of Lake Lanao depicting one of the episodes in the
epic poem Darangen, which was popularised by the Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance
Company.
Pangalay is the traditional "fingernail" dance of the Tausūg people of the Sulu Archipelago and
eastern coast Bajau of Sabah.
Maglangka
This dance which originated from Jolo, Sulu is classified under Muslim Dance. Literally
meaning "to dance," the maglangka is used to mold the adolescent girls into ladies of
good breeding and accomplished dancing skills. The girls are strictly taught to
gracefully execute movements imitating birds in flight, fish swimming in the sea, or
branches swaying in the air while remaining in the confines of a square cloth. these
movements require intense concentration and innate style as the ladies express
emotions and entertain guests.
The Kappa Malong – Malong is a Muslim – influenced dance. The sarong is a
pantubong costume, and dance is essentially shows the many ways that you
can get tired. There are also versions of the men’s and women dance
because they wear malongs in different ways.
CORDILLERA DANCE
Banga Folk dance
One of the interpretive dances created during the KAYAW days was the “BANGA”
dance. This dance is performed with Kalinga women showing their agility in
balancing the bangas on top of their heads while toddling through rice paddies
and mountain paths; a daily routine to fetch water from the mountain springs.
BENDAYAN is a traditional Benguet circle dance symbolizing the unity of the community.
ETHNIC TRIBAL DANCE
Binanog is an indigenous dance from the Philippines that features the movement of an
eagle/hawk to the symbolic beating of bamboo and gong that synchronizes the pulsating
movements of the feet and the hands of the lead and follow dancers.
Inagong dance is a cultural dance of Aklanon Bukidnon, the indigenous people of Barangay
Panipiason and Barangay Medina in Madalag, Aklan.
