Free Health Care Vs. Paid Health Care

Healthcare refers to preventative medical procedures or services aimed at improving the

well-being of a person. These services are provided through a health care setup made up of

physicians and hospitals. Health care can be either paid or free. While paid healthcare is offered

by non-government entities, free healthcare is provided by the government. Paid healthcare has

proven effective in the delivery of quality health care.

Free healthcare is dependent on government funds, while paid healthcare is dependent on

charities, not-for-profit organizations' support, and payments made by the patients. However,

free healthcare receives fewer budget allocations due to the competition of needs among the

government ministries (Cancarevic et al., 2021). This means that patients visiting free hospitals

might not receive advanced healthcare services. Furthermore, due to the limited budget, there are

a few doctors in free hospitals. On the other hand, paid hospitals do not depend on government

funding for their day-to-day operations; instead, they majorly use payments received from the

patients’ facilitated private insurance covers and thus can adequately meet the needs of the

patients.

Choice of treatment is a fundamental consideration in the treatment process. In paid

hospitals, the patients are provided with an opportunity to decide what type of treatment best

meets their needs (Cancarevic et al., 2021). Also, the patients are provided with an opportunity to

select a treatment option that they can finance. Moreover, they can also decide on the doctor to

look over their affairs. In free hospitals, the patients tend to contend with the provided treatment,

and in most instances, they are not in a position to choose the type of treatment or the doctors to

serve them.

It is the right of every person to access quality health care services. However, the above

analysis shows that paid healthcare is more effective when compared to free healthcare. The fact

that free healthcare is dependent on government funding means that it has to align itself with the

annual budget. On the other hand, paid healthcare is mainly a preservation for the rich

individuals, thus receives adequate funding to deliver more advanced healthcare.
