STRUCTURAL STEEL DESIGN

(UGNA 3032)
Tutorial 3
Design of Restrained Beam
Example 2
simply supported restrained beam S275 carries a 140 mm thick solid concrete slab along with an
imposed load of 7 kN/m2. The beam span is 7. 2 m and beams are spaced at 3.6 m intervals. Slab
provides continuous lateral restraint. Concrete density is 2400 kg/m3 and deflection limit of
span/360. Determine,

Example 82
Design Beam AB, consider load from beam X1-X1 only

Density of Reinforced concrete slab = 23.6 kN/m3

Live load (office lobby) = 6 kN/m2
fy = 275 N/mm2
Slab thickness = 100 mm

Find

Ultimate load on beam AB (apply 0.925 to modify dead load)

Design shear and moment on beam AB
Select a suitable section
Classify the section
Design ultimate load
Deflection: check deflection under unfactored variable loads

Allowable

Span/360 = 6000/360 =16.67 mm

Actual deflection:

𝛿= = = 28.3 𝑚𝑚
384 𝐸𝐼 384 𝑥 210000𝑥34100000

Section needs a revision as actual deflection is higher than the allowable.

Question
The steel framework is used to support the reinforced stone concrete slab that is used for an office.
The slab is 200 mm thick. Design the beam FED. a = 3 m, b = 4 m.
Load on beam is determined using Lecture 4.
