PART B WRITING TASK

Sample answer:
The food we eat has a direct impact on our health.
This is why learning to cook is so important. If young
people like me don't learn to cook, we'll be relying on
junk
food and fast food to feed us after we move away from
home. I believe cooking should be included in the
school curriculum in secondary schools, just like PE.
Some students will insist that they don't have time to
learn how to cook because they are too busy with
academic classes. However, if we don't eat well, we won't
be able
to study well. Studies show that too much sugar and
junk food affect concentration. When we're busy
studying, most of us reach for unhealthy snacks. Learning
to make ourselves healthy alternatives will increase our
learning power and help with our studies. Cooking classes
would definitely teach us how to take better care of
ourselves, and this would improve our academic studies.
On the other hand, some students might argue that
cooking classes should not be required. They suggest that
not every student is interested in cooking, and would
prefer to focus on more academic subjects while they are
at school. There are also issues with health and safety. For
examples, injuries could be caused by sharp knives or gas-
burning cookers.
While there are some understandable concerns about
time and safety for cooking classes in secondary
school,
in my opinion the benefits are more important. The eating
habits we develop as young people will have an impact on
us for the rest of our lives. Schools should have a role in
helping us create good eating habits by teaching us to
cook because our bodies are just as important as our
brains. My recommendation is to make cooking part of the
curriculum in order to better support our health and well-
being for life.

Sample answer:
Education is a powerful tool against disease. If the public is
taught about how to avoid an illness, it can help reduce the
number of people harmed by it. The drop in deaths from
malaria over a 15-year period shows us this. However,
unless public education is ongoing, its effects are only
temporary. Governments need to continue spending
money on public education about malaria in order to save
lives.
There was a steady decline in malaria deaths over 15 years,
which shows the power of public education. According to
the graph, between 2000 and 2015, malaria deaths dropped
in every continent across the world. In Africa, yearly
deaths dropped from 750,000 to 500,000. That's 250,000
people saved every year! This incredible reduction shows
that governments were really making efforts to teach
people how to avoid the disease. During this time, the
public learned about the effectiveness of mosquito nets
and
anti-malarial medicine from government campaigns. These
efforts had an obvious and powerful impact.
Yet, for public education to remain effective, it has
to continue. Sadly, in 2017, malaria deaths increased
in 13 countries worldwide. How can this happen after
such a steady decrease? It's mostly likely due to
people forgetting that malaria is a deadly threat.
Anti-malaria
campaigns became quieter and people started to relax
about using nets and medication. The unfortunate result
of this reduction in efforts to educate the public is that
people started to die from the disease again. This is why
governments need to go back to making efforts to
educate people about the dangers of malaria again.
To conclude, the numbers in the graph show the power
that public education has in reducing malaria deaths. And
the lesson is clear: this education must continue. It cannot
be reduced simply because the number of deaths have
decreased. Campaigns that inform people about how to
prevent malaria need to remain active as long as there
are mosquitos out there that carry the disease!
