8.4 Solutions of Quadratic Equations (Complete Notes)

The document discusses solving quadratic equations. It defines the discriminant as b^2 - 4ac in the quadratic formula. It states that if the discriminant is 0, there is one solution. If the discriminant is positive, there are two real solutions, and if it is negative, there are two complex solutions. It also discusses that the sum of the solutions is -b/a and the product of the solutions is c/a. Several examples are provided of finding the nature of the solutions, the sum and product of solutions, and constructing quadratic equations based on given solutions.

8.4 Solutions of Quadratic Equations

b2 - 4ac in the quadratic formula is called the discriminant.

If b2 - 4ac = 0, the equation has exactly 1 solution.

If b2 - 4ac > 0, the equation has 2 real-number solutions.

If b2 - 4ac <0, the equation has 2 complex non-real

(imaginary) solutions that are conjugates of each other
