Acoustics Questions

The document contains questions related to acoustics and sound behavior in enclosures. It includes questions about reflection, absorption, transmission, reverberation, echo, acoustic problems, controlling reverberation time, absorption of sound, acoustic design principles, ideal reverberation time for theaters, noise criteria, types of noise, noise control measures, and calculations of reverberation time for different enclosures. Question Bank

Acoustics

1. Write short notes on behaviour of sound in an enclosure. Write explaining reflection,

absorption, transmission, reverberation and echo.
2. Write short notes on Acoustic Problems. Make diagrammatic representations to
illustrate the idea.
3. Explain the difference between Echo and Reverberation. Also discuss the importance
of controlling the reverberation time in a multipurpose hall to be used for various
purposes like music concerts, theatre, lectures and projection of films.
4. What is absorption of sound? Discuss the properties of good acoustical materials.
5. Discuss general principles and factors which are important for good acoustical design.
6. What is the ideal reverberation time for Theatre and how is it calculated? What are
the design components of a Theatre for good sound quality?
7. Explain the difference between Sound and Noise. Also discuss Noise Criteria
8. What is Noise? What are the physiological and psychological implications of noise?
What is Decibel (Db)? Explain with a few examples a) low, b) medium and c) high
thresholds of noise intensity.
9. What are various noise control measures for buildings for external and structure borne
noise.
10. Short Notes:
• Echo
• Reverberation Time
• Sound Absorbers
• Noise Barriers
• Soundscapes
• Noise Reduction Coefficient
• Intensity and Loudness of Sound
• Decibel (dB)
• Acoustical Design for a theatre

Numerical

1. Find reverberation time for a hall of dimensions 40’ x 30’ x 20’ having average
absorption coefficient of 0.15.
2. If a university hall (15m x 8m x 3m) is heavily damped with absorption coefficient 0.3.
Calculate its reverberation time.
3. A space acquired for a sound recording studio measures - 20.00 Mt. × 15.00 Mt. and
has height of 4.50 Mt. with Absorption coefficient a) Walls : 0.30 b) Ceiling : 0.05 and
c) Floor : 0.10. Calculate the Reverberation Time of the studio when – i) no acoustical
treatment and ii) When it is proposed to have false ceiling in the studio with Acoustical
Tiles (Absorption Coefficient = 0.30) at a level of 4.00 Mt.
4. For a multipurpose space where the reverberation is too high and generates
confusion. The dimensions of the space are 25 x 10 m x 4 m. The floor is made of
porcelain tiles, a material generally used into public environment because its
resistance qualities, but, from an acoustic point of view, very reflective: the sound
absorption coefficient is about α = 0.02. The walls and the ceiling are finished with
painted plaster, then the sound absorption coefficient is about α = 0.05. Calculate the
reverberation time.
5. Calculate the reverberation time at 500Hz for an class room. The room size is 35ft
long, 20ft wide and 10 ft high. The walls are painted, the floors are tiled with a door of
(4ft by 7ft) and 2 windows of (5ft by 7ft), and with chalkboard (4ft by 20ft). Follow the
table for your reference –
