2. Rationale:
(Why do you want to conduct this study?)
- The outbreak of COVID-19 affected almost every sector, including higher education
institutions across the world particularly Philippines’ educational system. For this
purpose, the researcher aimed to investigate the effects of COVID-19 on the academic
performance of STEM students and their level of satisfaction with online teaching. It
also explored the significant difference in academic performance of students along
with their satisfaction level with online teaching across gender. There were 15-30
respondents. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were employed. The
findings of the study revealed that COVID-19 has negatively affected the academic
performance of Afghan students and the students were highly dissatisfied with online
teaching during this critical moment. Besides, the study revealed significant
differences in the academic performance of students and their level of satisfaction
with online teaching. A strong positive correlation was found between the academic
performance of STEM students and their level of satisfaction with online teaching
during the COVID-
19 outbreak. According to the findings of the study, several implications and
recommendations have been provided.
3. Significance:

- The goal of this study it to determine the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on STEM
students’ mental health. The study will be used on fixing gaps of the students’
situation status. The researcher would like to focus on highlighting the student’s
mental health status and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic to them as student.
This study would also give benefits to the following:
o Students - his study will provide them information about mental health
awareness and will further explain to them the effects of COVID-19 to the
learners.
o Parents - this study will help them to further understand the situation of their
children going in the midst of the pandemic, so that they could give time and
adjust for their children. This will provide them knowledge about the possible
effects of the COVID-19 to the student’s mental health.
o Teachers - this study will give them idea to promote awareness to their
students. This will give them ideas and information about the student’s mental
health status so that they could come up with a solution to encourage the
students in the midst of the pandemic.
o Future researchers – this study can provide future researchers with
additional and accurate information to further elaborate their future studies.
