Free Vibration of SDOF Systems: Seismic Analysis and Design (UCE 804) B.E. Civil, TIET, Patiala
1. A spring mass system with a mass of 90N and stiffness 90kN/m is subjected to an initial
displacement of x0 = 76 mm and an initial velocity of ẋ0 = 100 mm/sec. Plot the time
variations of the mass displacement, velocity, and acceleration.
Hints:
The displacement response of the system can be found using the expression (1) using system
parameters, such as natural frequency. The amplitude of displacement response (A0) can be
found based on the initial conditions and the natural frequency of the system.

2. Determine the values of ξ and ωD for the following viscously damped system: -
(a) m = 10 kg, c = 150 Ns/m, k = 1000 N/m.
(b) m = 10 kg, c = 200 Ns/m, k = 1000 N/m.
(c) m = 10 kg, c = 250 Ns/m, k = 1000 N/m.
Also determine the free vibration response of the viscously damped systems when xo =
0.1 m and ẋo = 10 m/sec.
Hints:
This problem differs from the Q1 in damping (‘c’ values are provided). Considering
damping, three different free vibration response can be obtained as: (a) underdamped,
(b) critically damped, (c) overdamped. Find out the damping ratio, ξ and subsequently
the damped natural frequency of the system (ωD) in order to determine the free vibration
response of the systems.
3. Estimate the damping ratio (ξ) for a system with mass = 800 kg and stiffness = 1000 N/m.
with the following values of damping coefficient: -
200, 500, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000 N/ms-1.
Plot the logarithmic decrement with respect to damping ratio ξ.
Hints:
Calculate the damping ratio, ξ based on the system properties (mass, stiffness) for each of the
damping coefficients provided, then find the value of logarithmic decrement as:
