What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master homographs (e.g., read-read). (EN3V-IIIg-h-13.7). The scope of this module
permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language used
recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to
follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can
be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

The module focuses on the lesson about:

HOMOGRAPHS (e.g., READ-READ)

At the end of the lesson, pupils are expected to:


 define homographs;
 use the correct homographs in a sentence; and
 realize the importance of using homographs in their real-life situation.

In this lesson you will learn to identify homographs.

What’s In

Homographs are words spelled the same but not necessarily pronounced the same
and having different meanings and origins.
Examples:

bear (to endure) - bear (animal)


close (connected) - close (lock)
lean (thin) - lean (rest against)
bow (bend forward) - bow (front of a ship)

What’s New
Notes to the Learner
Remember that homographs are words that shares the same written
form as another word but has a different meaning.
Ex. Close means connected; Close means lock
Homographs are pairs of words that have the same spelling, but different meanings.
Sometimes they are pronounced the same, and sometimes they are pronounced
differently. Use context clues within a sentence to determine the meaning of a
homograph.

Directions: Read the definitions. Choose the correct homograph from the Word Box
to go with each set of definitions. Write your answer on your notebook.
