PART 1. EVALUATE
What are the list involved involve in inspection of cargo hold.
The list involved involve in inspection of cargo hold are:
General cleanliness (No Rust or loose rust).
Spar ceiling.
Tween Deck draining holes.
Bilge system (Bilge well, strum box & non-return valve).
Sounding Pipes (Bilge & Double Bottom Tanks).
Air Vent. Pipes.
Electric cables, Lighting and connections.
General condition of side shell, bulkheads, frames and beams.
Double Bottom Tanks manholes
Ventilation ducts.
Fire detection and fixed fire extinguishing systems.
Hatch cover, check for water tightness (any damaged rubber must be changed) (grease all moving
parts including wheels, hinges and cleats).
Fixed hold ladders (Repair as necessary or place temporary ladders).
Hold manholes on the weather deck.
What is the purpose of sounding pipes and strum box in the cargo hold bilges?
The purpose of sounding pipes in the cargo hold bilges is to measure the quantity of fluid in a tank or a hold
bilge. The pipe allows a tape or sounding rod to pass through to the bottom of a tank or hold. Deck sounding
pipes pass through the weather deck and are fitted with screw-down caps. While strum box purpose is to
perforated strum box fitting of a bilge suction line prevents cargo residues to enter the bilge line.
What should be done in order to prevent any residues or debris that could damage the suction of bilges?
And how?
The bilge suction line in the hold bilge is normally fitted with a perforated strum box which prevents cargo
debris from entering the bilge line. The strum box should be thoroughly cleaned after each cargo discharge
and if possible, dismantled and checked for damage or corrosion.
PART 2. EXTEND
Is it necessary to ALWAYS clean the cargo hold bilges? Why?
Yes, the cargo hold bilges must be cleaned. Delays, off-hire, and charter party conflicts may arise when
cargo holds are offered for bulk loading and are not properly clean for the intended cargo. Inadequate
cleaning may also result in cargo contamination and infestation, leading to cargo damage claims from cargo
receivers. Furthermore, after conveying bulk goods, the holds must always be cleaned before any washing
attempts are performed. This reduces the likelihood of undesired cargo residues building in hold bilges and
impeding the operation of pumping out the washing water. Inadequate cleaning, on the other hand, might
result in cargo contamination, which can lead to cargo damage claims from receivers. If cement is polluted
with residues, for example, it loses its binding power, salt becomes liquid, and sugar might ferment. The
failure of the hold might be caused by a single sliver of coal left behind. Overall, we must constantly keep
