Lesson 1

The Nature of Science, Goal, Scope, Key Area Standards and


Principles

Objectives: At the3 end of the lesson , students are expected to:


a) Discuss the nature of science
b) Explain the goal of the teaching of science
c) Analyze the alignment of Key Area And Grade Level standards

The Nature of Science


1. Science is a wonderful world. It deals with nature and natural phenomena.
2. Science is evidence-based.it deals with the observable, the verifiable.. it deals with empirical
data. It accepts as true only that which has been positivity and empirically proven to be true
3. Science has no limits. Not all of reality is verifiable by the physical senses. The things of the spirit
cannot be proven by the physical senses and yet are as real as material reality.
4. Science knowledge is inherently uncertain. Scientific knowledge is tentative. Although scientific
knowledge is supported by a wealth of hard data from repeated trials, it is not considered final
word.
5. This fundamental uncertainty makes science a dynamic and expanding body of knowledge.
Science is a field of scientific inquiry.
6. Science is both a product and a process. It is information presented and also the way in which
the information has been collected.
7. As a field of study, science demands eyes keen for observing, analytical, synthesizing and bias –
free minds, traits such as perseverance, diligence and sacrifice, a scientific study means kong
hours of meticulous study, arduous research, sleepless nights, etc.
.
Aims:
          
The aims of the teaching and study of sciences are to encourage and enable students
to:
 
 develop inquiring minds and curiosity about science and the natural world
 acquire knowledge, conceptual understanding and skills to solve problems and make
informed decisions in scientific and other contexts
 develop skills of scientific inquiry to design and carry out scientific investigations and
evaluate scientific evidence to draw conclusions
 communicate scientific ideas, arguments and practical experiences accurately in a
variety of ways
 think analytically, critically and creatively to solve problems, judge arguments and make
decisions in scientific and other contexts
 appreciate the benefits and limitations of science and its application in technological
developments
 understand the international nature of science and the interdependence of science,
technology and society, including the benefits, limitations and implications imposed by
social, economic, political, environmental, cultural and ethical factors
 Demonstrate attitudes and develop values of honesty and respect for themselves,
others, and their shared environment.

Goals:

1. develop scientific attitudes and values acquire skill in employing the scientific method gain
functional knowledge and information arouse and sustain interest in future science-based
pursuits develop desirable social attitudes
2. Preparing Instructional Objectives Learning objectives must be stated using behavioral action
words such as the following: describe, compute, identify, illustrate, prove, analyze, distinguish,
estimate, interpret, plot a graph, justify, predict, integrate, generalize, synthesize, construct,
specify, relate, infer
3.  On Knowledge Students should be able to gain knowledge that they can apply in:a)
explaining the occurrence of events in their surroundings, b) answering questions that they are
confronted with, and inc) satisfying the curiosities of children.
4.  On Skill in Employing the Science Processes They must be able to classify, identify, predict
and interpret things as they investigate and search for information .Proficiency in employing the
science processes enable them to collect accurate data which can serve as evidence before
drawing a conclusion.
5. On values and attitudes Some values worth developing are open-mindedness, creativity and
objectivity. Attitudes of caring, helpfulness and tolerance are likewise inculcated as they work
together in science classes.
6. In the end, science instruction must be able to arouse and sustain a variety of interest that
may lead to: a) healthful and enjoyable hobbies, b) pursuit of science-based daily activities, and
c) future plan to pursue science professions.
Activity # 1
Directions: Answer the following questions . Your Output will be graded based on
rubric.
1. Choose two nature of science and exemplify the necessity and importance of
each nature based on your learning gained when your were in Junior and
Senior high school. Note: Your output should consist of no less than 100
words.
2. According to the Science conceptual framework of the K to 12 Curriculum guide, what
is the big goal of the teaching of Science” Explain.
3. Examine the alignment of learning outcomes to standards – key stage learning area
standards. Lay the grade level standards, key stage standards and learning area
standards side by side. Present in a table form .
