performance characteristics of the Dräger
Medical devices described in this Quick Guide,
each user must first carefully read and fully
comprehend the Instructions for Use before
operating the device.
A quick guide to provide information
on the basic functions of the Primus.

This guide presupposes a knowledge


of the Primus Instructions for Use
and is not intended to replace them!

Preparation for Use

Checking Cylinder Supply 1


and Central Gas Supply
(if available)

• Connect hose fittings for O2


Air and N2O to corresponding
fittings on the back of the
machine (1).

• Plug wall fittings for O2, Air


and N2O into central supply
wall outlets.

• Observe LEDs for the supply


pressure, they must be green (2).

• Open back up gas cylinder valves


to check cylinder pressure.

• The LEDs for the O2, Air and


N2O cylinder pressure must
be green (3).

• Close the cylinder pressure


valves again.

Checking Electrical Supply

• Ensure that main power cord


is plugged in.

Checking Compact Breathing

• Ensure that the compact
breathing system (1) is connected
and the ventilator is locked in place.

• Check status of CO2
absorbent (2), breathing bag 7
and patient hoses.

In Addition …

• Test the oxygen flush (3).

• Check oxygen safety control (4).

• Make sure vaporisers are in


position, locked and filled (5). 2

• Check water trap level and the


sample gas line connection (6).

• Check function of suction


system (7). Your suction system may
differ from the system shown.

• Connect anaesthetic gas


scavenging system.

Start Up

Start Up

• Switch on Primus using the


ON/OFF switch (1).

• Close Y-piece (place firmly


onto the corresponding cone
of the breathing system).

• Set the APL valve to MAN


and 30 mbar (2). There are
two versions of the APL valve.
Your version may differ from
the one shown. 2 3 1

• Close oxygen safety control


valve (3).

• Confirm the checklist,


if all points are OK.

• Primus will run internal


system tests.

Note: During this start up


procedure and up until the
checklist is confirmed, manual
ventilation is always possible. The
oxygen safety flow can be set to
0 -12 L/min and will be channelled
through the vaporiser.

Start Up

Self Test

• Follow the self test instructions


on the screen.
Information about system leaks
and compliance will be displayed.
Primus will accept leaks of up to
150 mL/min. The most common
causes of leakage are:

• Faulty breathing hoses or breathing bag


• Sample gas line
• Filter
• Incorrectly connected absorber
• Flow sensors
• Breathing system
• Vaporisers
• Water trap
• Oxygen sensor

Potential Test Results

All test results are colour coded and 1


are displayed next to each specific
test function. An advisory window
containing information on how to
remedy the problem accompanies
any error detected during the self test.

Start Up

There are three potential outcomes of the self test:

Leak Test

The leak test should be carried out after the patient hoses, vaporisers or soda lime have
been replaced. In addition, it should be performed following the self test.

To perform the leak test:


• In the standby screen, press the leak test soft key
• Follow the on screen instructions
• Push the rotary control knob to start the leak test

Self test results can be displayed, see page 7

Standby Screen

Primus activates the standby mode after successful test completion,


and will display the standby screen.

From the standby screen, you can access the following functions:

• Pre set carrier gas, O2 concentration and fresh gas flow


• Set age
• Set ideal body weight
• Restore site default settings
• Set alarm limits
• Self test results display
• Perform the leak test
• Delete trends
• Default configuration
(password protected - held by Key Users and Dräger)
• Access monitoring mode

Monitoring Mode

In monitoring mode, the Primus will measure and display gas measurements.
There is no fresh gas delivery or ventilation capability. If ventilation is required,
set the appropriate gas flow, select the appropriate ventilation mode and
press the rotary control knob to confirm.

• To begin monitoring without


ventilation and fresh gas flow
press the key while in standby.

• To return to standby: press the


key again and confirm using
the rotary knob.

Setting Fresh Gas


Concentrations

These may be preset in standby.

• Carrier gas: press and confirm


either N2O or Air (1).

• Oxygen concentration: press


O2%, set the concentration
with the rotary knob and
confirm (2).

• Fresh gas flow: press flow


l/min, set desired flow
and confirm (3).

• Fresh gas flow will start as


soon as a ventilation mode
is activated and is indicated

Hypoxic Guard Function (SORC)

Primus is fitted with a hypoxic guard function


(SORC). This is an electronic O2 minimum
delivery system that guarantees at least
25% O2 whenever N20 is used as the
carrier gas. This prevents the delivery
of hypoxic gas mixtures.

Spontaneous Breathing
“SPONT”

• Switch the APL (pressure limiting


valve) to “SPONT”. The
breathing system is open for
spontaneous breathing.

• Press the “Man. Spont.”


key and confirm with the
rotary knob.

Manual Ventilation “MAN”

• Switch APL pressure limiting


valve to “MAN”. There are
two types of APL. Please
familiarise yourself with
your own device.

• Press “Man. Spont.” key and


confirm with the rotary knob.
Note: the breathing system
can be quickly depressurised
by pressing the lever of the
APL valve or pulling the APL
valve upwards dependant on
the type of APL valve installed.

Mechanical Ventilation

• Press the desired key e.g.


Press. Mode.

• Using the soft key, select the


ventilation parameter to be
preset, then set and confirm
with the rotary knob.

• To start the ventilation mode


confirm with the rotary knob.

To return to Man/Spont mode:

• Press Man/Spont hard key

• Press rotary control knob to confirm

Fresh Gas Outlet (optional)

The Primus has an external fresh


gas outlet to allow the user to use
non rebreathing systems such as a
Bain circuit or Ayres T-piece.

• Prepare the circuit in accordance


with the manufacturers instructions.

• Attach the circuit to the external fresh


gas outlet located on the left hand side
of the Primus.

• Press the external fresh gas outlet hard


key and confirm by pressing the rotary
control knob.

Alarms Setting

All alarms can be displayed and set from


all 3 basic screens (standard/data/trend)

• Press the alarm limits soft key

• Use the rotary control to select the


alarm limit you wish to change

• Confirm change by pressing the


rotary control

Auto Set Alarm Limits

The auto set limits soft key can be


used to adapt minute volume and
airway pressure when a ventilation
mode is selected.

Switching to Standby/
End of Operation

• To activate Standby mode,


press hard key and press rotary
knob to confirm.

• To switch off Primus press the


ON/OFF knob.

• You will hear a series of beeps when


you switch the Primus off. During
these beeps, you can switch the
Primus back on and the device will
continue in the mode it was in.

Emergency Start Ups

• Release the oxygen safety


control knob by pressing and
set to desired oxygen flow,
between 0 and 12 l/min.

The oxygen flow is channelled


through the vaporiser.

Manual ventilation is available


at any time. 1

• Switch on Primus.

After approximately 35 seconds the checklist will appear.

• Press the cancel test key (1).


You can cancel the self test up
to 10 times. After that, it is
mandatory to perform a self test.

• Primus switches to standby


mode after completing the
minimal test (duration 10 seconds).

• Close safety O2 flow control.

• Continue as in normal
operation.

Power Failure

In the event of central power supply


the message “POWER FAIL”
appears on the screen.

If the battery is fully charged,


Primus can continue operating for
at least 30 minutes (typically
90 minutes). Remaining battery
capacity will be shown on the
screen. When the battery is
almost empty, the message
BATTERY LOW will be displayed.

If the battery is completely


empty, the device automatically
switches to Man.Spont.

Manual ventilation is available at


any time.

• Release the oxygen safety


control knob by pressing and
set to desired oxygen flow,
between 0 and 12 l/min. The
oxygen flow is channelled
through the vaporiser.

Gas Supply Failure

If the central gas supply fails, the


message “No N2O, O2 or AIR
DELIVERY” appears on the
screen.

Air or oxygen will be delivered in


place of the gas mixture
previously delivered; the amount
of fresh gas flow (l/min)
will remain the same.

100% Air will be delivered if


O2 fails.

100% O2 will be delivered if N2O


or air fails.

• Open the appropriate backup


gas cylinder valve for O2 or
N2O, or reconnect the central
gas supply.

If the carrier gas N2O fails, you are


able to use Air and vice versa.

Ventilator Failure

In case of ventilator error, the


ventilator will stop and display the
error message “VENTILATOR
FAIL” on the screen.

• Fresh gas flow and full


monitoring functionality are
not affected.

Operation automatically switches


to Man. Spont.; only manual
ventilation is possible.

Mixer Failure

The message “GAS MIXER FAIL”


appears on the screen.

• Ventilation and full monitoring


functionality are not affected.

• Release the oxygen safety


control knob by pressing and
set to desired oxygen flow,
between 0 and 12 L/min.
The oxygen flow is channelled
through the vaporiser.

information. This is intended as a quick
guide to disassembling/reassembling
the breathing system.

Disassembly instructions
Removing the Breathing System from
the Primus

• Remove accessory items such as


flow sensors, breathing circuit, filters etc
• Remove the inspiratory and expiratory ports
• Remove the Breathing System from the
Primus as shown below

Disassembly of the Breathing System

• Loosen the 5 sealing screws (A) using


the Allen Key (B) – Diagram 1
• Remove the cover
• Lift off the metal heater plate
• Loosen the 3 remaining sealing screws
to access the ventilator diaphragm and
remove – Diagram 2 Diagram 1
• Prepare all parts for cleaning &
disinfection process as per Hospital policy

Reassembly instructions

• Replace the ventilator diaphragm


• Replace the breathing block (A)
and tighten the 3 sealing screws
• Replace the metal heater plate (B)
• Replace the cover and tighten the
5 sealing screws (C)
• Replace the inspiratory and
expiratory ports
• Replace the accessory items
