Cell: 310-909-9830 Home: 562-789-1064 Engineering Professional -- Instrumentation & Control Technology Instrumentation and control (I&C) engineer acknowledged for delivering reliable applications and support activities for various hydrocarbon and mining/minerals processing plants. These pursuits and deliverables cover the gamut from technical and cost studies, narrative and detailed specifications, drawings, and controller configurations to positions as a refinery staff engineer, as a project member at three engineering firms. This technical background includes hands-on expe rience with pneumatics, electronics (analog, digital and wireless), radiation (l evel/density detectors), analytical (water chemistry and gas detectors) and mechanical components (tank vents, control and relief valves). Activities cover cost studies, design, client interfaces, FA T/SAT tests, through construction, startup and operational/maintenance follow up . Professional Strengths include: * Process Control System Design * Project & Safety Life Cycles * ASME & API Over Pressure Vessel Protection (non-SIS) * Cause & Effects Matrix * Root Cause Failure Analysis * Failure Mode & Effects Analysis * Processes: Oil & Gas, Mining & Minerals * Project and Department Management * P&ID Development * Refinery Staff Instrument Engineering * Hazardous Conditions Evaluations * Safety: SIL, SIF, SIS * Foundation Fieldbus, Wireless * Control Systems: - Datasheets - Loop & Logic Diagrams - Wiring Diagrams - DCS & Specialty Controllers - Controller Configurations Project Highlights -- Examples of projects and costs Project Description Time Value * Analyzer specs for water chemistry for a power plant 7 wks $300K * Instrument Index (InTools)-950 tags for refinery OSBL 3 mo. $35K * Wireless links for 75 H2S Gas Detectors 1 yr $150K * Dual compressor anti-surge and process controls 6 mo $500K * Vibrating valve replacement 3 mo $75K Selected Contributions & Successes * Challenge - Pulsating (ultra-low) pressures were destroying pressure instruments in an automated loop. Action & results: Inserted controlled restriction in the impulse (i.e. sensing) line and extended the length of this line, reducing the amplitude of the pulses by a factor of approximately 10 and stopping the destruction of instruments. * Challenge - Catastrophic failures (plug disengagement) of 10" throttling valve occurring every 5 years. Action & results: Performed Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) to diagnose and determine that out-gassing of CO2 (from specialty liquid) within valve at its Vena Contracta and subsequent pressure recovery caused "buffeting" or jerking of valve stem. Metal fatigue caused stem/plug connecting-weld to fail, dropping plug to bottom of valve housing. Specified and installed new "low recovery" valve which keeps pressure higher, preventing CO2 from out-gassing and stopped the instability. * Challenge - New floating roofs and Geodesic domes added to several refinery storage tanks, requiring addition of costly underground wiring for new hi-hi level switch system to each tank for remote alarming to avoid overfilling and damage to the new domes. Action & results: Recommended wireless transmission from each tank's switch to a remote radio receiver near control central (DCS/TDC 3000 location) and to use aboveground wiring for the short distance from receiver to DCS system, resulted in cost savings of $200,000 and tested successfully.
