Introduction

Electronic Science has applications in almost all fields such as defence, entertainment,

communication, automobiles, medical, agriculture, industrial automation, home

appliances etc. The curriculum for the B.Sc. Electronic Science is systematically

planned to create a foundation for the students to build up a successful career in

Electronics. Theoretical knowledge and practical training will help the students to

handle real world problems in all fields.

Objectives
● To provide in-depth knowledge of scientific and technological aspects of Electronics.

● To prepare the students to apply the acquired knowledge towards planning, designing

and building electronic applications.

● Train students to be an Entrepreneur or part of the Industry, through experiments,

projects, hands on training, industrial visits and market surveys.

● Enrich knowledge base of students for pursuing higher studies and taking up research

and development in Electronics.

Title: Basic Electronics

Semester-I Paper-1
Objectives of the course:
1. To get familiar with basic circuit elements and passive components
2. To understand basic electrical circuits and circuit theorems
3. To get introduced with passive Transducers/sensors
4. To understand applications of circuit elements and components
5. To learn various concepts regarding RLC circuits

Unit Title and Contents


Circuit Elements and Passive Components
Concept of voltage and current source (ideal and practical), dc and ac sources
I (amplitude, period, frequency, phase, peak, and rms). Basic passive components –
resistor, capacitor, inductor, Transformer, Cables, Connectors, Switches, Fuses, Relays,
and Batteries.
Circuit Theorems
II Ohm's law, Kirchhoff’s laws (KCL & KVL), Thevenin’s theorem, Norton’s theorem,
Superposition theorem, Maximum Power Transfer Theorem.
Basic Electrical Circuits
Voltage and current relationship of R, L, C. Reactance and impedance, phasor
III diagrams, RLC circuits – series and parallel resonance, frequency response, bandwidth,
Q factor, concept of phase difference, time constant (RC & RL circuits), charging –
discharging of C. RC and RL Filters. Active power and Reactive power, Power factor.
Introduction to Sensors

IV Classification of sensors – Active and Passive. Thermistor, LDR, microphone,


loudspeaker, dc and ac motors, strain gauge, LVDT, thermocouple, float sensor, Tilt
sensor

1. To understand the importance of semiconductor materials in Electronics
2. To study different type of diodes and their application circuits
3. To study construction of transistor, types and configurations
4. To study transistor as a switch and its use as driver to the load
5. To study unipolar transistors and their use in different applications

Semiconductors
I Classification of materials – Conductors, Insulators, Semiconductors (based on energy
Band gap), Intrinsic, Extrinsic Semiconductors, p-type, n-type semiconductors.
Diodes
Study of diodes (circuit symbol, working principle, IV characteristics), depletion layer,
barrier potential, forward bias, reverse bias. Types of diodes – rectifier, zener, varactor

diode, schottky diode, LED, photodiode, solar cell, opto-coupler.
Applications of diodes- Clippers, Clampers, Voltage Doubler, Voltage Multiplier,
Rectifiers (half, full and bridge), Regulated Power Supply.
Bipolar Junction Transistor
Circuit symbol, types – PNP, NPN, construction, working principle, IV characteristics.
Transistor amplifier configurations – CB, CC, CE. Biasing circuits. Emitter follower.

DC load line, Q point, factors affecting stability, α, β, γ of transistor, h-parameters.
Applications of transistor as a switch - Astable Multivibrator, On/Off Control of LED,
DC motor, Relay.
UJT & FETs
Circuit symbols, types, construction, working principle, IV characteristics,
IV specifications and parameters of UJT, JFET, MOSFETs and FINFET.
Comparison of BJT, JFET and MOSFET.
Applications - UJT relaxation oscillator, JFET as VVR, MOSFET as a switch.

3. To study frequency response of reactive networks
4. To understand and use various lab instruments like DMM, CRO, Signal/Function
Generator, Power supply etc.

1. practically study characteristics of components.
2. be able to analyse the circuits using circuit theorems.
3. be able to observe the working of the circuit using Simulator.
4. use various lab instruments like DMM, CRO, Signal/Function Generator, Power supply for

1. To understand classification of transistor amplifier
2. To learn multistage amplifier
3. To learn power amplifier
4. To learn basic parameters of ideal and practical opamp
5. To understand different application circuits of opamp

Transistorised Amplifier
Amplifier (Black box concept) – Voltage gain, Current gain, Power gain. Classification of
I amplifiers, Single stage CE amplifier AC, DC analysis, frequency response, Gain –
Bandwidth product, Effect of coupling capacitor and bypass capacitor on frequency
response. Concept of class A, B, AB, C of transistor amplifier. Type of amplifier coupling
methods, Multistage amplifier, Power amplifier.
Operational Amplifier
Symbol, block diagram, Opamp characteristics, basic parameters (ideal and practical)
II Concept of virtual ground, concept of feedback, Information about IC741. Opamp as
inverting and non-inverting amplifier, voltage follower, adder, subtractor, V to I and I to V
converter, Active filters (up to first order), Precision rectifier, Instrumentation amplifier,
Comparator and Schmitt Trigger, Square wave generator, Function generator using Opamp.

Title: Introduction to Digital Electronics

Objectives of the course:
1. To learn number systems, codes and binary arithmetic
2. To understand basic logic gates & Boolean algebra
3. To design arithmetic and combinational circuits

Unit Title and Contents


Number system
Introduction to decimal, binary, hexadecimal, octal number systems and their
I interconversions. 1’s complement, 2’s complement of binary numbers, Binary
addition, subtraction, multiplication, division. Weighted and non – weighted codes,
BCD codes, comparison between binary and BCD, BCD arithmetic, Gray code and
their conversion to binary and vice versa, ASCII code.
Logic Gates and Boolean Algebra
Positive and negative logic, basic logic gates (OR, AND, NOT) and derived gates
II (NAND, NOR, XOR) – symbols, truth tables and ICs. Boolean Algebra rules and
laws, De Morgan’s theorems (statements and proofs), NAND & NOR as universal
logic gates, POS and SOP forms of Boolean expressions, simplification of Boolean
expressions using K maps (up to 4 variables).
Arithmetic Circuits
III Half adder, full adder, half subtractor, parallel adder, parallel subtractor,
Comparator, parity generator and checker, IC’s of above circuits.
Combinational Circuits

IV Multiplexer, Demultiplexer, encoder, decoder, code converters – decimal to binary,


binary to gray and vice versa, keyboard encoder, BCD to 7 segment decoder,
priority encoder.
