Model Marine application

Applied Date ~ Region All

Summary.
-. Understand Alternator function and do troubleshooting when faulty is detected.
-. A troubleshooting check sheet must be attached when register a claim
1.Alternator
1-1. Alternator function and composed components
- Function: supply all electrical consumers within the engine with energy while charging the battery at
the same time.
- Components: composed of Housing, Stator, Alternator rotor and Alternator regulator.
① Belt Pulley

② Fan

③ Stator winding

④ Slip rings

⑤ Regulator

⑥ Excitation winding

1-2. Faulty symptoms and Causes of Faulty

Cause of Faulty
Symptoms
The cause is not always due to an internal alternator fault,
The following symptoms may indicate a
such as a faulty winding, rotor, rectifier or control unit. Before
fault in the alternator:
replacing the alternator, additional components should be
considered as a cause of failure and checked.
• Charging indicator lamp lights up • Prematurely aged or faulty Engine battery
• Starting difficulties due to insufficiently • Electrical connections on the alternator loose or faulty
charged engine battery. • V-belt loose or faulty
• Engine battery becomes hot due to • Belt tensioner or free-running roller damaged
overload

1-3. Testing the Alternator: Troubleshooting & check sheet
When performing troubleshooting on the alternator, the following fundamental rules are to be
observed:
✓ Do not disconnect, short circuit or mount battery or connection terminals when the engine is
running or the alternator is in operation (voltage peaks can lead to damage)
✓ Never perform voltage or current measurements via short circuit (voltage peaks) - use a voltmeter
or ammeter

NOTICE:
When performing welding work on the vehicle and when removing or installing the alternator, the battery must be
disconnected.

➢ Check sheet
█ Charging indicator lamp flickers or Lamp does not light up with ignition switched

CAUSE REMEDY Check

V-belt too loose Tighten V-belt
Engine speed is too low Recheck, adjust idle speed with 700~750rpm
Battery discharged or faulty Charge battery, check, replace if necessary
Cables or connections damaged, Check cables and connections, attach,
loose or oxidized replace if necessary
Immediately disconnect battery or B+
Short circuit of a positive diode
and repair/replace alternator

█ Battery is not charged or charged insufficiently
