Background
The basic unit of government in the Philippines is the barangay. As the lowest
level of political and governmental unit in the Philippines, each barangay is administered
and supervised by cities and municipalities. A Barangay Tanod Brigade exists in every
barangay. Legaspi, P. E., Alampay, E. A., & Ilago, S. A. (2020).
The equivalent of civilian police in the area is Barangay Tanod. The barrio tanod
brigade is an important part of the barangay's growth. It is one of the tools used by the
Barangay Peace and Order Committee (BPOC), which has the primary responsibility of
maintaining peace and order in the barangay. The Sangguniang Barangay, as the
barangay's legislative body, is required under Chapter 4 Section 391 No. 16 of Republic
Act 7160 or the Local Government Code of 1991 to provide for the creation of a
community brigade, barangay tanod, or community service unit as needed. The
barangay tanod will be overseen by the Punong Barangay (Vicente, J. B., Ammiyao, G.
D., Arud, P. M. T., Asiaben, C. P., and Balunos, N. R. 2020).
Barangay Police Security Officers operating as an auxiliary of the Philippine
National Police are designated force multipliers under NAPOLCOM Memorandum
Circular 2008-013. Despite the fact that barangay police, or "tanod," work on a volunteer
basis, they are willing to put their lives on the line to safeguard the safety of the people
in their own Barangays (Austria-Cruz, M. C. 2018).
The BPAT is then in charge of the PNP's Barangay Peacekeeping Operations
(BPO). The PNP's Barangay Peacekeeping Action Teams (BPAT) is a national program
that encourages community empowerment to handle real-time response in the event of
a need, whether it's for peace and order, security, or rescue (Saligan, M. P.,
Baldesanso, M. L., Maniabo, G. L., Canini, N. D., & Jomuad, P. D. 2018).
Crime has far-reaching consequences that are as diverse as society itself. It can
be as deleterious to development and quality of life as being personally dangerous,
socially harmful, or politically embarrassing. Its subtle eroding of national
accomplishment and long-term impact on motivation can be significantly more

damaging to a society that is now recognized. Crime pervades all sectors of society
and, as such, is a global sort of warfare in which non-combatants are on the losing end.

Peacekeeping is the basic function of the police. And police visibility is one of
the main thrusts of the peacekeeping activity. Without this, it would be very difficult to
maintain peace and order (Martinez, V. V. 2019). The objective of this study is to
determine the effectiveness of barangay tanod in crime prevention in the selected
barangays of San Miguel.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study aims to determine the effectiveness of barangay tanod in crime prevention. It
focuses in the selected barangays of San Miguel, Zamboanga del Sur utilizing the
community folks as research participants. The study will be conducted during the school
year 2022-2023.
1. What are the demographic profiles of the barangay Tanod in terms of Age, Gender,
Civili Status, Educational Attainment and Years of experience as Barangay Tanod?
2. What is the level of implementation of Barangay Tanod in crime prevention?
3. What is the level awareness and satisfaction on the implementation of Barangay
Tanod in crime prevention?

Research Setting : San Miguel Municipality
Sampling Technique : Convenience Sampling
