Answer the following questions comprehensively.

1. Why picture books attractive to children? In what way do pictures help in the
understanding of the stories?

- Picture books, at their most basic, help children understand that words express significance
by integrating the pictures in the book with the words on the page. Kids will look at the
pictures on the section for additional info or reference works to help them develop their
vocabulary. They even use the pictures to learn some new item names. Picture books not
only get kids excited about learning, but they also teach them value systems and learnings.
The confirmatory value inside a picture book could often aid our children learn how and
where to differentiate between right and wrong and how to make effective choices.

- One example of picture book is " Corduroy" by Don Freeman.

a. Literary Techniques

- Don Freeman also included literary techniques in this story to help convey meaning, add
details, and give explanations for the story. These add more depth to the story, and will
make it more enjoyable for the students to read.

b. Alliteration

- "...with a warm, wide smile..."


- Alliteration is used here to describe the smile Lisa gave Corduroy when she saw him at
the store for the second time. It helps make the description words flow, emotion, and
rhythm. Again, this will keep the readers engaged and help their understanding.

C. literary Elements

- "Corduroy is a bear who once lived in the toy department of a big store."

- Don Freeman started off the story with this sentence using imagery in order to give
setting and description to the readers. It gave background information, setting, context,
and an idea of the main character as well.

D. Hyperbole
- Corduroy is without a doubt the best choice for your elementary school students as the
message it gives is not only entertaining, but it is valuable.

- Younger children are more impressionable, so it is important to teach them these


messages about friendship, accepting others, and yourself so they remember them.

- This book will without a doubt be appealing to your elementary students as it is based
on a bear named Corduroy who is in a department store waiting to be bought. The story
talks about all the ups and downs while Corduroy isn't happy with himself and his
appearance due to his missing button. However, after a series of events, Corduroy
learns a very important lesson of accepting yourself and the importance of friendship
that would be very valuable to young students.

- ""Now who in the world did that!""

- This is an example of a hyperbole because it uses exaggeration and helps keep the
readers interested. Also, it is dialogue so it brings the story to life.

book special and different compared to others.

E. Rising Action
- The resolution in this story teaches more than one important lessons. Corduroy ends up
realizing that he shouldn't of tried to change himself, and to accept everything since he
should be loved how he is. Lisa not only bought him and gave him a home, but she gave
him true friendship where he was accepted, loved, and happy.

- In order to keep the younger students engaged in their reading, this book has an
interesting rising action where the book talks about Corduroys encounter with a young
girl Lisa who wasn't aloud to buy him because of appearance. Lisa's mom told her that
the bear didn't look "brand new" and Corduroy heard this conversation which made him
feel not good enough.

F. Climax

- While Corduroy was waiting and wishing to be bought, a young girl named Lisa saw him
and wanted to take him home, but her mother refused to let her because of his missing
button and "wrong" appearance. This leads him to go around the store searching for his
button, runs into security guards, and trying his hardest to feel complete.

Lisa ends up going back to the store with her mom, and buys Corduroy with her own money regardless
of his appearance and missing button. This is an example of how Lisa felt about buying Corduroy no
matter if he looked new or not. She gace him a home, and they gave each other friendship.

Tone: The tone of the story is friendly and heart-warming as it highlights the friendship Lisa and
Corduroy end up building.

Speaker: A narrator (third person POV)

Occasion: The genre is fantasy. The setting took place in a department store and Lisa's room

Audience: Young children (elementary age)

Purpose: Teach kids to be themselves, accept themselves and others, and show importance of friendship

Subject: People feeling alone, like they don't belong, and have to change in order to be accepted

All in all, Corduroy is the best choice for your kids because it gives messages that will help them grow to
be more accepting, loving, and friendly to others. These are all traits that they will use for their whole
life. Also, being in school, the kids will meet so many new people and it is crucial for them to accept
others and know they should be proud of who they are as they are learning and growing up.
