Lesson 1 Introduction To Multimedia

This document provides an introduction to multimedia systems and defines key concepts. It discusses the history of multimedia, from early forms like newspapers and motion pictures to modern developments like radio, television, and the internet. Multimedia is defined as the combination of different media types, including text, graphics, sound, images, and video, delivered interactively to users. Linear content provides no interactivity, while nonlinear content is interactive. Examples of multimedia applications include websites, games, and presentations. The core elements of multimedia - text, graphics, audio, video, and animation - are also explained.

BITC 421: Multimedia Systems

Introduction
to
Multimedia Systems

BY

J.K MUTAI
History of Multimedia:

1. Newspaper: perhaps the first mass communication

medium, uses text, graphics, and images.
2. Motion pictures: conceived of in 1830's in order to
observe motion too rapid for perception by the human
eye.
3. Wireless radio transmission: Guglielmo Marconi, at
Pontecchio, Italy, in 1895.
4. Television: the new medium for the 20th century,
established video as a commonly available medium
and has since changed the world of mass
communications.

2
History of Multimedia:
5. The connection between computers and ideas
about multimedia covers what is actually only a short
period:
⚫ 1945 - Vannevar Bush wrote a landmark article
describing what amounts to a hypermedia system
called Memex.
⚫ 1960 -Ted Nelson coined the term hypertext.

⚫ 2000 - WWW size was estimated at over 1 billion

pages.

What is Multimedia?

⚫ Derived from the word “Multi” and “Media”

⚫ Multi
⚫ Many, Multiple,
⚫ Media
⚫ Tools that is used to represent or do a certain
things, delivery medium, a form of mass
communication – newspaper, magazine / tv.
⚫ Distribution tool & information presentation – text,
graphic, voice, images, music and etc.
Definition of Multimedia

⚫ Multimedia is a combination of text,

graphic, sound, animation, and video
that is delivered interactively to the user
by electronic or digitally manipulated
means. GRAPHIC

CONTD…..

⚫ Multimedia is the field concerned with

the computer controlled integration of
text, graphics, drawings, still and moving
images (Video), animation, audio, and
any other media where every type of
information can be represented, stored,
transmitted and processed digitally.
Linear VS Non-Linear

LINEAR
⚫ A Multimedia Project is identified as Linear when:
⚫ It is not interactive

⚫ User have no control over the content that is being showed to

them.
⚫ Example:
⚫ A movie
⚫ A non-interactive lecture / demo show
Linear VS Non-Linear

NON-LINEAR
⚫ A Multimedia Project is identified as Non-Linear when:
⚫ It is interactive
⚫ Users have control over the content that is being showed to them.
⚫ Users are given navigational control
⚫ Example:
⚫ Games
⚫ Courseware
⚫ Interactive CD
Multimedia Application.

⚫ A Multimedia Application is an
application which uses a collection of
multiple media sources e.g. text,
graphics, images, sound/audio,
animation and/or video.
What is Hyper Text and Hyper Media?

⚫ Hypertext is a text which contains links

to other texts.
⚫ Traversal through pages of hypertext is
therefore usually non-linear (as indicated
below).
Hyper Media

Hypermedia is used as a logical extension of

the term hypertext, in which graphics, audio,
video, plain text and hyperlinks intertwine to
create a generally non-linear medium of
information
A combination of hypertext, graphics,
audio, video, (linked elements) and
interactivity culminating in a complete,
non-linear computer-based experience.
Example

⚫ Hyper Media
Main Page
1. Video link
2. Image link
3. Audio Link

ANIMATION

⚫ A broad term for something that contains words to express

something.
⚫ Text is the most basic element of multimedia.
⚫ A good choice of words could help convey the intended message
to the users (keywords).

⚫ Is the technology of capturing, recording, processing,

transmitting, and reconstructing moving pictures.
⚫ Video is more towards photo realistic image sequence /
live recording as in comparison to animation.
⚫ Video also takes a lot of storage space. So plan carefully
before you are going to use it.
Summary: Hypermedia and Multimedia

 A hypertext system: meant to be read

nonlinearly, by following links that point to other
parts of the document, or to other documents
⚫ HyperMedia: not constrained to be text-based,
can include other media, e.g., graphics, images,
and especially the continuous media | sound and
video.
⚫ The World Wide Web (WWW) | the best example of a
hypermedia application.
⚫ Multimedia means that computer information
can be represented through audio, graphics,
images, video, and animation in addition to
traditional media.
