THESIS

The document provides background information on the Guijo tree, also known as Shorea guiso. It is native to several Southeast Asian countries including the Philippines. It is classified as critically endangered. The study aims to propagate Guijo trees through stem cuttings and assess the effects of different chloral concentrations on rooting. The objectives are to determine if propagation through stem cuttings is possible, assess the effects of chloral propagation on rooting, and identify the best chloral treatment to enhance bud and root formation. The significance is that Guijo trees are found in primary forests in the Philippines and other countries and are critically endangered.

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Guijo Tree also known as "Shorea guiso" and common name are red balan,Hasselt's guijo.Family name is
"Dipterocarpaceae".Origin are indigenous to the Philippines, also found in
Indonesia,Malaysia,Thailand,Vietman, usually in undisturbed forests up to 400 meters altitude,on ridges
with sandy soils ,or limestone.

Philippines Native trees 101 up close and personal, this is dipterocarp that dipterocarps are a family trees
known for their immense height and hard wood ,it is in the IUCN Red list 2004,this is a list of threatened
species, dipterocarps usually need more care as saplings and we were told to keep this in bright shade.

Guijo is a large ,medium-sized tree, reaching a height of 50 to 60 meters ,with a trunk diameter of about
175 centimeters ,with dark colored branchets.Tree has a strongly buttressed hole at the lower portion of
the trunk ,leaves are alternate, simple, entire and ovate -oblong,8 to 10 centimeters long,3-5 centimeters
wide, with a rounded tip.Flowers are short-stalked ,developing into 3 of 2 long winged fruits which are
expanded at the base.Petals are a times as long as the sepals..Stamens are in clusters of 20 to 40 in
three groups, with filaments dilated at the base.

Statement of the Problem

The Study will answer the following questions:

1.Can guijo tree be propagated through stem cuttings?

2.Are there significance differences of the effect of various concentration of cloral propagation of guijo
tree?

3.What is the best sown for the cloral propagation of guijo tree that will enhance better buds and roots
formation of the species?

Objectives of the Study

In general, the study aims to propagate Guijo tree seedlings in using non -mist method specifically the
study aimed to:

1.Determine the posibility in propagating Guijjo tree through stem cuttings.

2.Asses the effects of cloral propagating on rooting of guijo tree.

3.Identify the best sown of cloral propagation, that will enhance better bud and root formation of guijo
tree.

Significance of the study

Guijo tree found in primary forests throughtout the Philippines, and critically endangered. Also found in
Brunei,Indonesia ,Malaysia ,Thailand and Vietnam. In the Encyclopedia Americana (1920) Tropical forests
products ,guijo was considered on of the moat useful timbers of the philippines .Today, the tree is
classsified as critically endangered in the IUCN red list of threatened species (2010).No reported
medicinal use in the Philippine.

For timber,the wood used for flooring,boat building,carpentry,furniture,cooperage,musical

instruments, decorativer veneer, pallets, paneling, etc.Papernaking is study showed shorea guiso can be
used in a mixture of saw dust pulp as filler in the production of printing and writjng papers.Resin is a
dammar, resin known as "huille de bios"is obtained from tree.Commercially,it is an ingredient of
inks, lacayers oil paints, varnishes, etc and used as glazing agent in foods.Value of hand resin similar to
liquid resin, the good quality is 2000 and 2500mil/kg.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Characteriatics of the Study

A large tree growing upt o 40m high and 180 cm diameter. The Guijo tree is long exposeed bark is light
brown with corky pustules and sheds in scroll.Shaped or almost rectangular patches freshly exposed
bark is light reddish brown.Inner bark is light reddissh brown and stringy in texture.Leaves are lanceolate
or ovate lanceolate to oblong, acute,or accuminate at apex, rounded or subcuneate at base, glabrous or
nearly glabrous.Guijo is distingushable by dark-colored branchets, pubescent.Leave nerves atleast 15
pairs.

Chapter 111

The researcher will conduct an experimental research in cloral propagation of guijo tree at Ifugao state
University Potia Campus,Alfonsolosta ifugao on a year of 2021 if possible due to the pandemic.

As an alternative production strategy,Stem cuttings would be collected from 19 month old Shorea guiso
in a hedge garden at the College of Agriculture and forestry.
