1. OPERATION
(i) Cooling side (Water Channel)
(a) The valve should be manipulated in such a way that all fluid will flow in a gradual
manner.
(b) The air vent should always be slightly opened. Proper care should be taken so as not
to let the air gather in the water channel or tube inside.
(c) Flow rate shouldn't exceed the designed valve. If possible, the flow rate should be
checked with Flow-meter in case of necessity.
(Such as leakage, performance problem etc.)
(d) The inlet and outlet temperatures, pressure and flow of the fluid should be
periodically recorded.
(e) For the flow control, outlet valve should always be used instead of inlet valve. The
inlet valve should be constantly fully opened.

(ii) Shell Side

During starting up, make sure that the air vent valve is fully opened. After
confirming that the air is completely vented out, the valve should be closed.

NOTICE:
z During starting up, Air Vent valve should be fully opened.
After confirmation of complete venting out of air, it should
be closed.

z Do not open steam line without cooling water flow, as it

may cause trouble with tubes leaking and gasket leaking.

2. CLEANING
Cleaning must be carried out when the following phenomena are found.

a) If any scale is found out on the inside surface of cooling tubes by checking, or if the
specified temperature can not be obtained for inlet and outlet of fresh/sea water, then
proper cleaning should be carried out immediately.
b) In case the scale is found frequently on the inside surface of cooling tubes by
checking and cleaning, then overhauling for cover of the cooler must be carried out.

(i) Checking
Take off water channel or cover to check tube inside.

(ii) Cleaning of shell side

(a) Discharge the drain completely.

(b) Close in/outlet valve.
(c) Fill up chemical solution through soda hopper or air vent valve.
(d) Connect the chemical cleaning line to air vent & drain valve and circulate.
(e) In case of severe fouling condition, it is preferable to contact the special
chemical cleaning maker for cleaning agent.
(f) At any case, chemical solution should be neutralized with alkalic solution and
completely rinsed with clean fresh water.

(iii) Cleaning of Tube side.

(a) Discharge the drain completely.

(b) Take off channel and reversing cover.
(c) Assemble nylon brush as like Fig.1 and clean tube inside with this brush.

NYLON BRUSH(A) HANDLE(B)

JOINT (C) BAR(D)

Make below brush cleaning unit by assembling above A, B, C & D and insert the unit to
tube inside for cleaning.

3. MAINTENANCE CHECK & CLEANING

Maintenance check is to be carried out deliberately as like the below mentioned steps.

The above figure shows the three-dimensional drawing for drain cooler with indication of
its different components.

(i) LEAKAGE FROM TUBE

In the following cases as below, there is maximum possibility of leakage from tube. So
please check it by the pressure test.

a) Extraordinary decrease or increase of the cooled fluid.

b) When the cooling water outlet temperature rises too high as compared to normal
value.
c) When the shell inside gives an extraordinary sound.

If leakage from tube is observed, repair or replace it with new one as mentioned below.

a) Leakage from tubes inside.

- Plugging the both sides of tubes with plugs.
For tube plugging job, please refer to Fig.2.
b) Leakage from the expanded part.
- Re-expand the tube with an expand tool. If the leakage does not stop in spite of
expansion, then plug up the tube or replace it with new one.
c) When tube is corroded or damaged, replace it with new one or plug it up. Plug is
delivered as one of the spare parts.
For tube replacing job, please refer to Fig.3.

NOTICE:
- Tube leakage could happen due to unexpected reasons. As a
countermeasure, 2% of spare tubes are additionally included.
When tubes, within 2% of total tubes, are leaked, please blind
(plugging) those tubes with plugs supplied as spare
(There’s no performance deterioration).

- Sometimes, customers point out the low quality of tube &

tube sheet. But we surely use those materials manufactured
from world widely well-known maker, thus we are not related
to low quality of those materials.

OPERATION & MAINTENANCE PAGE : 7 OF 11

NOTICE:
When in operation, the max. Velocity specified in the below
table should not be exceeded.

The max. velocity above for each material is recommended by tube maker.

MATERIAL Max. velocity( m/s )

1 Al-Brass 1.8

2 Cu-Ni( 90/10 ) 2.0

3 Cu-Ni( 70/30 ) 2.3

If the actual velocity on tube side is higher than design value, then we are not responsible
for occurrence of any damages related to this.
The overflow of tube side would make a serious problem, especially erosion, which
strongly results in the damage of tubes.

Plugging the
both side of tubes

end of the damaged tube by chisel

(iii) Push the damaged tube by

PUSH OUT TOOL and remove it (iv) Inset a spare tube

(v) Connect tube expander with S-handle

and insert to the tube, then rotate it (vi) Install plastic insert

(ii) Check & replacement of protecting anode

Protecting anodes are furnished to protect cover inside from corrosion. So, regular
maintanance checks should be carried out and replaced with new ones in accordance with
the specified period as mentioned on anode caution plate or drawing if they are wasted
out. Please refer to Fig. 4 for installation procedure of protecting anode.

NOTICE:
DO NOT FORGET TO REPLACE ANODES WITH NEW ONES
BEFORE ANODES ARE COMPLETELY WASTED OUT

If anode are wasted out totally, then there is maximum possibility of occurance of
following accidents.

(a) Water channel and cover get corroded.

(b) Inside of the cooling tube and the surface of the tube plate yield galvanic
corrosion.

The life period of anode is specified by us, but it is much influenced by operating
condition, sea water temperature and other environmental factors.

NOTICE:
- At beginning stage of operation, proper attention should be
paid to life-span of the anodes and don’t forget that anodes
would be wasted out during sea-trial test period before delivery
of the ship.

- Anode’s life time is variable depending on actual running

conditions. In case of over-flow and high velocity of sea water,
anode consumption gets faster than normal and anode erosion
may happen. Thus, the periodic inspection of anode condition is
required.
