EE-322 Power System analysis

Tutorial Sheet – 1
Date of submission:
Q.1 Consider a transposed three-phase line whose parameters are z = 0.9 x 10-4 + j4 x 10-4 ohms/m/phase
and y = j0.25 x 10-8 mhos/m/phase. The line is 300 km long. Compute
(i) Characteristic impedance
(ii) the propagation constant γ
(iii) parameters of the equivalent-π representation using the first two terms of expansion of the
hyperbolic terms.
Q.2 In Q.1 for a receiving end voltage of 220 kV between phases and a receiving end power of 200
MVA at a p.f. 0f 0.8 lagging, compute, using the π representation, the starting end voltage and current.
Q.3 For the line in Q.1 compute the parameters in the nominal-π circuit. Calculate the sending end
voltage and current for the same terminal conditions as in Q.2. Compare the two results.
Q.4 A 50 Hz three-phase transmission line has a total series impedance of 50 + j100 ohms and a shunt
admittance of 0.001 mhos. The receiving voltage is 220 kV with a load of 50 MW at 0.85 p.f. lagging.
Find the voltage and complex power at the sending end using the short line, medium line and long line
approximation.
Q.5 A three-winding transformer with primary and secondary rated voltages as 15 kV and 66 kV
respectively, has a tertiary winding rated at 5 kV. The measured impedances referred to the 15 kV side
and 100 as the base MVA are as follows.
Zps = j7.0 pu, Zpt = j15.0 pu and Zst = j10.0 pu.
Construct the π-equivalent circuit.
Q.6 In Q.5, a load of 10 MW at 0.8 p.f. lagging is connected across the secondary. The 5 kV winding
has a resistive load of 0.5 pu. Find the voltage and power factor at the primary terminals.
Q.7(a) Consider an off-nominal turns ratio transformer with a tap ratio a = 0.8 and an impedance of j0.5
referred to unity tap side. Construct an equivalent circuit and identify the shunt elements as
capacitive/inductive.
(b) Repeat (a) if a = 1.2.
Q.8 In Q.7 refer the impedance to the tap side and verify that you get the same equivalent circuit.
