Traditional Modern

biotechnology biotechnology

Refers to traditional techniques development of diverse

of using living things or microorganisms which expands
organisms to yield new products the potential capabilities of
or to modify a certain thing such traditional biotechnology that
as food to become another leads to technology advancements
useful product to benefit human thus giving birth to the term
needs. "modern biotechnology"
Moldy Soybean Curds

The first antibiotic used by the

Chinese for treating boils.

TRADITIONAL BIOTECHNOLOGY

Moldy soybean curds, the first antibiotic used by the

Chinese for treating boils are considered as traditional
biotechnology. Ancient Chinese used to ferment
soybean milk until it coagulates and forms curds into
tofu which they later discovered as something that can
be used to treat boils as soon as it develops mold that
are called antibiotics.

CopyCat/CC. CC is an example of the
application of modern biotechnology
because it uses the process of genetic
engineering. This process was done by
researchers who transplanted DNA derived
from the nuclei of cumulus cells of a calico
cat into the empty egg cell of another cat,
then transplanted the embryo into yet
another cat forming a new breeding
offspring. This process is called
recombinant DNA

Cheese & Milk

Yeast

Used by ancient Egyptians to leaven

bread and ferment bear.

TRADITIONAL BIOTECHNOLOGY

This Egyptian technique that uses yeast to leaven bread and ferment beer suggests traditional
biotechnology. Yeasts were probably the first microorganism to be exploited by humans. The brewing of
alcoholic beverages and the leavening of bread using yeast represents the oldest, and still the largest,
biotechnologies. The ancient Egyptians extended their bread-making technology to the production of an
acidic beer from a lightly baked loaf of germinated grain.
Cheese Making
In this process, milk is cultured by using starter

bacteria to acidify the substance later then

adding rennet to form milk curds

TRADITIONAL BIOTECHNOLOGY

Cheesemaking was first discovered when

people started drying and curing animal
stomachs as a storage vessel for liquids
during long journeys. When milk is poured in
the said vessel, it coagulates forming cheese
because of the rennin found on animal's
stomach that helps in the process of
cheesemaking considering it as a traditional
biotechnology.
