Scenario

You work for an IT company which has been asked by the manager of a furniture retailer
to create a website and renew the IT system.

The furniture retailer consists of four retail outlets, a warehouse and a head office based in
Germany.

As part of an on-going expansion strategy, the management team has decided that they
need to create a website and update their IT system.

The IT system needs to link the head office, warehouse and the retail outlets to each
other. The IT system will need to be secure and private as it will deal with customer orders
and deliveries, staff payments and stock management etc.

The website should allow customers to purchase furniture online, make secure payments
and arrange deliveries. The website should also allow customers to view the locations of
shops and opening times. Customers should be able to view the website and submit
orders via their smartphones. The website should also have an administration section that
allows staff to maintain and update the website.

The project will therefore require the creation of a new website and IT system.

The senior management team has allocated a budget of £80 000 for the project. The
problem that you must solve is how you will spend the money to get the best results, with
the aim of having a website and IT system which is capable of meeting the above stated
requirements. The website and IT system should also be able to cope with the on-going
expansion of the company.

The senior management team has requested a detailed report on your plans before they
make the funds available. This should include any assumptions you have made.

Task 1 – 90 Marks
Report content
Prepare a report on your problem solving activities and solution. The nature of the report is
that asked for at the end of the scenario stated above.
The following subsections must be included in your report.
1. Plan (10 marks)
2. Description of Problem Solving Process
a) Problem definition (20 marks)
b) Identifying Selection Criteria (20 marks)
c) Process of selection (evaluation of solutions) (20 marks)
d) Statement and details of solution (20 marks)

Guidance
You should write your report in your own words, using appropriate language. You can
assume that the reader has studied this module, so you do not need to provide detailed
explanations of technical terms that have been covered. You do need to use technical
terms appropriately in your report.

Any material that you have used to inform your report should be included in the list of
references and cited within the main body of the report. You must not copy and paste any
material from the Internet or other sources.

You must write your report in your own words and support it with diagrams if appropriate.

Submission requirements
A word-processed document. The word count for this document is 1500 words.
