REVIEW OF LITERATURE

31

Intellectual behavioral and emotional commitment to meaning and satisfying work. By joy, we refer to

the feeling of success and fulfillment that result from meaning work without joy and meaning in work,

environment for your employees will make your team happier and your company will do better as a

Happiness and satisfaction are subjective concepts – while for some of us monetory benefits can be

equated with job satisfaction, some might strive for recognition of their hard-work and lose motivation

on failing to achieve so.

For some people, having a friendly environment at work is an essential requisite for deriving pleasure.

No matter what the standards are, being content with our careers is crucial for maintaining the ‘work-

life’ balance.

The University of Warwick, UK, in one of their studies revealed that happy workers are up to 12%

more productive than unhappy professional. They are more likely to be the proud owner of good

health, have smooth flowing professional and personal relationships, and prove to be more beneficial

for the organization as a whole.

32
“TO STUDY THE JOY AT WORKPLACE IN AN ORGANIZATION”
AKI’s Poona College of Arts, Science & Commerce

It is an emotion, a sense of well being that comes when we feel good about the work we do when we

feel involved in ‘the professional commitment.’ Arbedjsglaede is a common word in Denmark, which

means happiness at work. In a fundamental sense, workplace happiness comes when:

1. We enjoy doing tasks assigned to us

2. We feel right about the people we are working with

3. We are happy with the financial benefits we get from the job

4. We have the cope of improving our existing skills

5. We feel respected and acknowledged at work

Joy at workplace is not the sum of proper investment and good returns; it is more than that. Individual

factors like personality traits, level of perception, underlying psychological stressors, and emotional

intelligence influence the degree to which we feel comfortable in a professional situation.

In the book, “The Happiness Advantage” author Shawn Achor stated that a company with happy

employees could increase their sales by 37%productivity by 31%, which directly contribute toward

building a high-performance work environment and improves the quality of life for all people involved

with work.

The Importance of Happiness At Work

The concept of happiness at work was not there until a few decades ago, and there is a reason for that.

In the last few years, we have seen drastic changes in the industrial sector- we now work in positions

that did not exist twenty years ago.

1. Happiness Multiplies Success

2. Happiness Builds Positivity

3. Happiness Reduces Stress

4. Happiness at work means a healthy life

5. Happiness at work increases likeability

33
“TO STUDY THE JOY AT WORKPLACE IN AN ORGANIZATION”
AKI’s Poona College of Arts, Science & Commerce

The science behind happiness at work

Happiness is a strong positive emotion and is a fundamental human experience (Diener and Diener,

1996).

Since ages, happiness has been an intriguing aspect of research and history, however, a relatively

recent inclusion in the field of psychology (Mc Mahon, 2006). Positive psychology, or the science

of happiness, which became popular in the past decade, was the first step by mental health

professional to gauge the importance of joy in different walks of life (Seligman, 2000).

The investigation of joy, or positive brain science, is a more extensive part of regular brain

research and comparatively contemporary. Until several years ago, psychological research was tied

in with taking care of the mental problems and taking life back to the regularity.

Recreational Facilities:

Recreation is an activity of leisure, leisure being discretionary time. The need to do something

for recreation is an essential element of human biology and psychology. Recreational activities

are often done for enjoyment, amusement, or pleasure and are considered to be “fun”.

In business world the recreational facility is often offered as the facility to the employees for

their well being and happiness at work.

List of recreational facilities

Basically there are four types of Recreation

1. Physical activities – sports, games, fitness, etc.)

2. Social activities ( parties, banquets, picnics, etc)

3. Camping and outdoor activites (day camps, resident camps, backpacking, float trips, etc.)

4. Arts and crafts activities ( paintings, scrap booking, ceramics, woodworking, etc).

RESEARCH METHODLOGY

36
“TO STUDY THE JOY AT WORKPLACE IN AN ORGANIZATION”
AKI’s Poona College of Arts, Science & Commerce

4.1. Introduction

There are mainly two different research methods, quantitative and qualitative in collecting
information. It is important to choose appropriate research methods to achieve the research
purpose. Quantitative research method is associated with numerical, statistical or mathematical
measurements to investigate the relationship between theory and research. This method is
applied to test theories and expressions. It was first developed to investigate natural
phenomenon, then started to be applied in social sciences in surveys, econometrics, laboratory
experiments, etc. Questionnaire is often considered as one of the main approaches in gathering
data for social research. On other hand, qualitative method, the second type of research method
is aiming to understand human behaviour by applying inter-related interpretive practices. Instead
of comprehensive analysis of large numbers of samples, qualitative methods pay attention to
wide range of practices which present individual knowledge, opinions and feelings. It can be
achieved by multiple research approaches including interview, focus group, and ethnography.
Briefly speaking, in qualitative research, outcomes and findings are described in words, while in
quantitative research, these are described in numbers.

Both qualitative and quantitative methods are applied in this research paper. We believe
quantitative and qualitative methods are not opposite to each other; applying together can help to
complete our findings. The research approach to be applied here is questionnaire through which
data and information will be collected based on theories and previous studies. The main part of
questionnaire result will be expressed.

4.2. Data Collection Method

1. Primary Data

Primary data was collected from the respondents by administering a structured

questionnaire and also through observation, interview and discussion with management.

37

2. Secondary Data

Apart from primary data collected, the data collected through text books, the records of Shree

Balaji Corporations, Journals from library, and Internet is used for the study.

4.3 Research Tool

Research tool used in this study is Questionnaire.

4.4Sampling

In statistics, quality assurance, and methodology, sampling is the selection of a subset (a

statistical sample) of individuals from within a statistical population to estimate characteristics of

the whole population. Statisticians attempt for the samples to represent the population in

question. Two advantages of sampling are lower cost and faster data collection than measuring

the entire population.

1. Sample Population:

There are totally 200 employees working in the organization.

2. Sample Size:

Out of the total strength the sample taken amongst workers is 50 employees.

3. Sample Method:

The research was made by the survey in accordance to the convenience of the employees. So the
sample type is convenient sampling.
