CLEFT LIP AND CLEFT PALATE

 These are birth defects that are commonly called “orofacial clefts” which occur when a baby’s lip or
mouth do not form properly during pregnancy. These facial and oral malformations that occur very early
in pregnancy while the baby is developing. Clefts results when there is not enough tissue in the mouth
or lip area, and the tissue that is available does not join together properly.

CLEFT LIP
 A cleft lip is an opening in the upper lip.
 A cleft lip happens if the tissue that makes up the lip does not join completely before birth. This results
in an opening in the upper lip.
 The opening in the lip can be a small slit or it can be a large opening that goes through the lip into the
nose. A cleft lip can be on one or both sides of the lip or in the middle of the lip, which occurs very
rarely.

CLEFT PALATE
 A cleft palate is an opening in the roof of the mouth.
 A cleft palate happens if the tissue that makes up the roof of the mouth does not join together
completely during pregnancy. For some babies, both the front and back parts of the palate are open.
For other babies, only part of the palate is open.

Causes
 Exact cause is still unknown but factors could increase the risk such as:
 Taking certain medications during pregnancy
 Inadequate prenatal nutrients
 Exposure to chemicals during pregnancy
 Smoking cigarettes, using drugs, and/or drinking alcohol during pregnancy

Medical Management

palate, or both; some surgeons favor early repair, before the newborn is discharged from the hospital; other surgeons
prefer to wait until the newborn is 1 to 2 months old, weighs about 10 lbs, and is gaining weight steadily.
Dental speech appliance
If surgery must be delayed beyond the 3rd year, a dental speech appliance may help aid the child develop intelligible
speech.
