PROJECT OUTLINE
The thesis is about the development of an oceanarium. As the name suggests, it is
related to under water.
India is surrounded by sea from 3 sides, rich in marine life. Marine life being one of the
most important resources of the country and so thus there is an increasing demand in
conservation and development of our marine wealth. There’s no state of art facility in
the country for appropriate scientific research and awareness.
An oceanarium means underwater aquarium. It is like a natural theme park where one
can see the marine creatures in their natural habitat. Many recreational activities can
combine with the oceanarium to make it a complete recreational space for any age
group. It is basically a salt-water aquarium for displaying marine animals & plants
particularly oceanic, pelagic, fishes and mammals.
Public oceanarium serves as a purpose of recreation as well as education or it provides a
platform for education through entertainment. For researchers and research institutes it
provides vast research possibilities, which is not only beneficial for them but also helps
provide conservation possibilities for the species.
The oceanarium is basically an edutainment attraction and is designed for family
recreation, offering both youngsters and adults the fun, excitement and enriching
experience of the wonderful underwater world.
The modern concept of the term oceanarium is a gigantic aquarium- an artificial ocean
habitat with all kinds of marine creatures, especially large ocean dwellers such as sharks
and dolphins. It can basically be called as a marine mammal park. It is a commercial
theme park or aquarium where marine mammals such as dolphins, beluga whales and
sea lions are kept within water tanks and displayed to the public in special shows.
It is an advance form of an aquarium, often located on the ocean or on a bay or river
and features outdoor pools and aquatic environments that enable visitors to see large
and small fish and other marine life from below the water surface. The underwater
aquarium concept is a revolutionary concept in entertainment along with education
which bases its drawing power on our natural human curiosity of other forms of animal
life.

APPROACH:
Department of Fisheries has envisaged establishing the first Oceanarium of the country
at Mamallapuram (Chennai) with international standards.
The Government proposes to house rare fish species, coral reefs, research labs and other
entertainment facilities. Replicating an underwater environment with marine species,
developing facilities to house the marine living organisms, maintaining sufficient stock for
replenishment, providing complete balanced nutrition and feeding schedule, monitoring
the water quality continuously.

Location: Mahabalipuram
Area: 16 acres
It is a proposed site by the Tamil Nadu State Government.
Has good connectivity with other states.
CRZ clearance is acquired for the site.
Next to the sea, giving abundant availablity of water.

 SPORTS CITY – KOCHI

PROJECT OUTLINE:
Despite its huge population, India is almost always at the bottom in the Olympics Medal
Tally because of the lack of facilities provided in the field of sports.
The proposition of the thesis lies within creating an advanced facility for sports in the
city of Kochi, that would help spread sporting culture in the city as well as serve a
stepping stone in raising the sports standards of the country. The project of this scale
would serve as an urban initiative for an inclusive approach towards developing the
quality of sports infrastructure and education in the city. Due to the lack of land parcel
in the heart of the city, the sports city project has been proposed in the outskirts of the
city. Nevertheless, the site remains well connected through road and will be connected
through metro sooner. Introducing this form of built environment would not only instill
a change in the way people perceive sports.
The sports city project is also expected to be a major tourist destination. Not only would
it be the first of its kind in the country, but it would also provide the users with state of
art facilities from around the globe. The project aims to be the missing puzzle in India’s
push towards sporting excellence.
APPROACH:
The current trends and practices from around the world suggest that a holistic approach
is necessary to address the concern of creating an urban sporting culture. An
architectural intervention may be integrated with different possible solutions which may
include everything from physical upgradation of sporting infrastructure, inclusivity of
sporting facilities and maximum utilization of area to provide an additional facility to
non- special means such as mini events, coaching classes, skill training, heritage policies,
cultural events, informative publications, summer and winter camps and place branding.
It is important to look at each sporting event with equal importance, widening the
horizon of scope in the subject of sports as a possible career.

In the light of all these solutions that complement one another, an architectural
intervention would be in creating a web of solutions where the ideas work as a single
entity.

Location: Kochi, Kerala
Area: 32 acres
Kerala has a strong sport following which can boost the success of the sports city.
As the project is still under proposal stage, proper site is yet to be allotted.
