640
 Pixel is an acronym for
Picture Element and is the X X
smallest element in a
Y X=0 X=640
digitized image. The Y=0 Y=0
Y
layout of pixels is known
as the Cartesian grid
system.
1 Pixel
 Each pixel has an X,Y
address that corresponds
to its location on the grid. 480
Software uses these
coordinates to inspect the
image against the
inspection algorithm.

 Each pixel is assigned a

grayscale or grayshade X=0
value that is proportional Y Y=480
X=640 Y
Y=480
to its brightness.
Grayshade is a value
between 0-255 where 0 is

Gradient
The difference in grayshade between two pixels. In our inspections we
establish a gradient limit. It is adjustable between 1 and 255 and has a
default value of 30. If the actual gradient found while inspecting a product
exceeds the value of our limit we have found what’s called an “edge point”.
In the example below, if the gradient in our inspection is set at 30, the
inspection found 4 locations where a gradient of 30 was exceeded and
therefore 4 edges were found. (95, 110, 100, 105)

0 5 95 110 5 100 105 0 5 10

Delta
The difference between pixels whose shades are being compared when seeking an
edge point. It is adjustable between 1 and 180 with a default value of 2. In the
example below, if the delta is 2, the shades from the first and the third pixels in the
region are compared seeking a difference equal to the gradient. If the delta is 3, then
the first and fourth are compared. GENERALLY SPEAKING, as the delta is increased
the sensitivity of the inspection is increased because it allows you to find more
edges. In the example below, if the gradient in an inspection is set at a value of 30,
when the delta is set at 1 there are 4 edges, when the delta is set at 2 there are 6
edges, and when the delta is set at 3 there are 7+ edges (more edges would be
found as you continue the scan).

Size
The difference between how many pixels are grouped together and are being
compared when seeking an edge point. It is adjustable between 1 and 20 and has
a default value of 2. In the example, if the size is 2, the shades from the first two
pixels are averaged and compared with the average of the third and fourth pixels
in the region. If the size is 3, then the first, second, and third pixels are grouped
together and compared with a group comprising the fourth, fifth, and sixth pixels.
Gradient = 1.5 Gradient = 26 Gradient = 8.5

(13 + 8) / 2 = 10.5 (6 + 18) / 2 = 12 (25 + 22) / 2 = 23.5 (42 + 57) / 2 = 49.5 (51 + 31) / 2 = 41 (45 + 54) / 2 = 49.5

Gradient = 12.7 Gradient = 8.7

(13 + 8 + 6) / 3 = 9 (18 + 25 + 22) / 3 = 21.7 (42 + 57 + 51) / 3 = 52 (31 + 45 + 54) / 3 = 43.3

I/O Diagnostics
This screen is used to verify the presence
of input and output signals.

The green lights are input signals (signals

that originate outside the Intellispec and
are communicated to the system). When
an input is received the light is on.

The red lights are output signals (signals

that originate inside the Intellispec and are
transmitted out of the system). When an
output is generated the light is on. An
output signal can be manually turned on
and off by left-clicking on the appropriate
light.
Part rate & encoder rate are also displayed.

Correlation Diagnostics

For those systems that have correlation

sensors, this screen is used to verify the
correlation sensor information is being
received by the system. It is a
troubleshooting tool.

As the production unit is operating, if the

correlation sensor is transmitting pulses
they will count up in the appropriate
window. For example, if you have a cavity
sensor attached to machine part 1 (MP1)
and are running a 8-cavity blow molder, you
will see MP1 increment up from 1-8
repetitively.

Part Tracker Simulation

• Part Tracker Simulation allows the user to

insert a simulated part rate in ppm (parts per
minute).
• This could be useful during troubleshooting
or if a part detect sensor is bad and a
simulated part rate would allow inspection to
continue.
• To do this you would left-click in the check
box and then enter the desired part rate in
the window.

Missed Packets Exception
• For each part and for each camera, two
packets of information are communicated:
1. The part tracker sends the host PC a
signal stating the camera has been
triggered (correlation signal)
2. The host PC then sends a pass/fail
signal back to the tracker (results
signal) when the inspections are done
• A missed packet exception occurs when the
part tracker has sent out X number of
correlation signals without receiving any
results signals back from the PC. The default
is set at 21.
• When this number has been met a “Lost Part
Tracking” input is received on the Missed
Parts / Results software.

Support Package

A Support Package is a tool that can be used if a software or computer-related problem

exists. It gathers a pre-designated set of files, zips these files into a smaller packet of
information, allows the user to download this zipped packet to a different medium, and
then this can be e-mailed to Pressco. Pressco software Engineers could then unzip this
packet to view the files and therefore troubleshoot the problem.
Step 1: displays Pressco contact information

Step 2: provides a block where the user can type a description of the problem. This
description will be attached to the data packet. It is always helpful to be as detailed
as possible when describing the problem in that it makes the troubleshooting effort
more efficient.

DISCOVERY SOFTWARE

What is Discovery?

“Discovery” is software installed on the Intellispec hard drive that automatically looks for
and then identifies certain components installed on each lane. Specifically, this software
identifies any Cameras, Lighting Drivers, Part Trackers, and if used, Intellimass Drivers that
are attached to the system. Each one of these devices communicates with the Intellispec
software via Cat-6 cabling and is assigned a unique MAC address.
It is anticipated that end-users of our system will rarely need to use this software; however,
if a new component (i.e. camera) is installed on the system this software would be used to
configure the new camera with the Intellispec software.
Additionally, during system start-up if a previously configured component fails to
communicate with the Intellispec software, the Discovery Software screen will
automatically appear on the user interface, alerting you of the problem.
The following slides will familiarize you with the Discovery screen and then show you how
to access and use this software.

Accessing and Use of Discovery

• The initial configuration of all hardware devices will be performed by the Pressco installer, and it
is not anticipated that plant personnel will normally need to utilize Discovery software.
• The Discovery screen is automatically displayed during system start-up anytime a hardware
device that was previously configured is not communicating with the Intellispec software.
• An example of a situation where plant personnel may use the Discovery software and actions to
be taken follows:
o During system start-up a camera does not communicate with the Intellispec software.
o The Discovery software sees this as a missing piece of hardware and automatically displays
the Discovery screen. The configuration tree shows the camera in the expected location
but displayed in orange, indicating that this hardware device is missing.
o As a first step the user should open the Tools Menu Icon (the wrench) and select
“Rediscover New Hardware”, this will trigger the software to initiate a search for the
missing camera.
o If the camera re-establishes communication, as seen by the camera name changing to
black, the user can close the Discovery software and resume normal operation.
o If the camera does not re-establish communication this indicates a hardware problem and
the camera will most likely need to be replaced.

Part Timing Terminology

Part Width –
The number of encoder pulses that the part detect sensor “sees” the part.
Part Present Delay –
The distance (in encoder pulses) from the part detect sensor to the camera
centerline. When this circuitry is met two independent signals are generated to:
1) have the lights strobe on, and 2) have the camera snap an image.
Reject Time Delay –
The distance (in encoder pulses) from the part detect sensor to the rejecter. This
signal ensures the correct part is rejected.
Reject Dwell or Reject Pulsewidth –
The duration (in milliseconds) of the reject signal. This signal must be long
enough to ensure the part is efficiently rejected, and short enough to ensure that
only one part is rejected for each reject pulse.

Reject Confirm (if used) –

The distance in encoder pulses from the rejecter to the reject confirm sensor.

Optical Surface Cleaning

NOTE: Debris and contamination can build up on both glass and plastic surfaces, appearing
in the inspection window and causing false rejects. Clean glass and plastic surfaces often
and anytime dirt becomes visible in the inspection window to avoid false rejects.
Glass Cleaning
• Blow off dust with canned compressed air
• Use a clean non-abrasive cloth dampened with a lens cleaning solution
• Use a lens tissue and lens cleaning solution on camera lenses
• If surface has compound on it, clean w/alcohol, then with lens cleaning solution
Camera Lens Cleaning
• Clean all camera lenses once per month with lens tissue and lens cleaning solution
• Be careful not to alter position of the focus or aperture on the camera
Plastic Cleaning
• Use canned compressed air to blow away dust, DO NOT wipe away dirt as plastic
coating may be scratched
• Use a clean non-abrasive cloth dampened with a mild soap and water solution.
Saturate surface completely to let particles wash away. DO NOT use paper towels or
paper napkins as these may scratch surfaces.
• Dry the surface with clean, compressed air.

Optical Surface Cleaning

Beam Splitter Cleaning (Only on some inspection modules)

• Remove Beam Splitter to access the bottom side, may need to raise camera to access
the Beam Splitter (be sure to note camera position before moving it)
• Blow off dust with canned compressed air
• Clean glass on Beam Splitter as described earlier in Glass Cleaning
• If equipped with a diffuser inside the Beam Splitter, this must be cleaned as well as
described earlier in Plastic Cleaning
• Replace the Beam Splitter assembly

Part Detect Cleaning

• Depending on the product, the part detect sensor is normally either a

proximity sensor (metals) or a fiber optic sensor (plastic).
• The part detect sensor must remain clean in order to properly detect parts. The
surface of these sensors must be cleaned regularly to prevent dirt and oil build-
up.
• Clean the part detect sensor surfaces with a soft, clean, lint free cloth
dampened with a mild soap and water solution. Clean the sensors on both
sides of the conveyor (if applicable).
• Do not use glass cleaning solution or strong solvents on plastic surfaces as they
might be damaged.
• The frequency of cleaning will depend on plant and process conditions.
