Title: Volumetric analysis

Aim: To determine the concentration of a solution of sulphuric acid.

Material/Apparatus:
● Conical flask
● A retort stand
● Pipette
● Burette
● Sodium hydroxide
● Methyl orange
● pH indicator
● Sulphuric acid
● Distilled water

Procedure:
1. The burette was rinsed with sulphuric acid and then filled with acid.
2. Sodium hydroxide solution was used to rinse the pipette and 25 cm❑3 of the
acid was poured into the conical flask.
3. A few drops of methyl orange was added to the contents of the conical flask
and swirled to ensure that it was well mixed.
4. The initial burette reading was then taken.
5. The sulphuric acid was added slowly to the conical flask and swirled
repetitively until the yellow colour of the contents in the conical flask
turned orange.
6. After the colour change, the final burette reading was taken and the volume
of the sulphuric acid was calculated.
7. The conical flask was emptied and rinsed with distilled water.
8. This experiment was repeated twice more until three volumes of the acid
were recorded.
9. The recorded volumes of the acid were averaged and the results is the
volume necessary to neutralize 25 cm❑3of sodium hydroxide.

Observations/Results:

Results for Titration

Analysis:
1. Determine the volume of sulphuric acid needed to neutralize 25 cm❑3 of
sodium hydroxide solution.
10.8 + 10.9 + 10.9 = 32.6
32.6 ÷ 3 = 10.9

The volume of sulphuric acid needed to neutralize 25 cm❑3of sodium hydroxide

solution is 10.9cm❑3.

2. Calculate the number of moles of sodium hydroxide used in the

titration. [relative atomic masses: H=1, Na=23, O=16]
NaOH= 25 cm❑3
25 ÷ 1000 = 0.025
0.025 mol is the number of moles of NaOH used in the titration.
3. Write a balanced equation.
H2SO4 + 2NaOH ⇒ Na2SO4 + 2H2O

4. Determine the number of moles of sulphuric acid used in the titration.

H2SO4 + 2NaOH ⇒ Na2SO4 + 2H2O
0.025 = 2

X=1
1:2
0.025 ÷ 2 = 0.0125
0.0125 mol is the number of moles of sulphuric acid used in the titration.

5. Determine the molar concentration of sulphuric acid.

H2SO4 = 10.9 cm3
H2SO4 = 0.0109dm3
0.0125 ÷ 1.0109 = 1.15
1.15 mol dm-3 is the molar concentration of sulphuric acid.

6. Determine the mass concentration of sulphuric acid. [relative atomic

masses : H=1, O=16, S= 32]
Mr(H2SO4) = 98
1.15 х 98 = 112.7
112.7 g dm-3 is the mass concentration of sulphuric acid.

Conclusion:
It can be concluded that the experiment was successful as the volume of sulphuric
acid needed to neutralize the sodium hydroxide solution (10.9cm3) was found. It
can also be concluded that the mass concentration was 112.7g dm-3 and the molar
concentration of sulphuric acid was 1.15 mol dm-3.

Reflection:
During this experiment I learnt how to find the volume of an acid which needed to
neutralize another acid, the mass concentration, the molar mass and the number of
moles. The use of this experiment can be used in medicine. Pharmacists use
titration to get the proper mix when compounding medicines.
