THIS QUESTION PAPER CONSISTS OF 2 PAGES

(Excluding this front page)

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Answer ALL the questions.

2. Write clearly and neatly.

3. Number the answers clearly.

PERMISSIBLE MATERIALS

1. Non-programmable pocket calculator without the cover

Question 1 [18 Marks]

Describe the following

1.1 fixed pint iteration [4]

1.2 Newton Raphson Method by using Taylors Series [5]

1.3 The Secant Method [3]

1.4 Bisection [6]

Question 2 [32 Marks]

2.1 Solve the differential equation for y(1.10) given by 𝑦 ′ = 2𝑥𝑦, 𝑦(1) = 1, ℎ = 0.05 [8]

2.1.1 Compare the solution to the true (analytic solution) [4]

2.2 Solve the differential equation 𝑦 ′ = 𝑥 + 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑦, 𝑦(0) = 0 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 = 0(0.25)1

𝑥0 = 0, 𝑦0 = 0, ℎ = 0.25, using improved Euler’s method. Four iterations only [10]

2.3 Solve the differential equation 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝑒 0.8𝑥 − 0.5𝑦, 𝑥0 = 0, 𝑦0 = 2 ℎ = 0.5

Using the Runge Kutta method up to two (2) iterations. [10]

Question 3 [14 Marks]

3.1 A spring with constant of restoration k (Hooks Law) is stretched a distance x with a
mass m attached at the end. Assuming there are no external forces such as friction, the
force due to the motion of the mass m can be expressed as d 2x
m + kx = 0 . Use Euler’s
dt 2
scheme to derive the equations that would be needed to find a solution to this problem. [4]

3.2 Solve the second order differential equation 𝑦 ′′ + 𝑡𝑦 ′ + 𝑡 = 0,

ℎ = 0.1, 𝑦0 = 1, 𝑦0 = 2, 𝑡0 = 0. Three iterations only [10]
