Tutorial Sheet – 04 (Magnetic Circuits and Single Phase Transformer)

1. The magnetic circuit shown in Fig. 1 has dimensions Ac= Ag= 9 cm2, g = 0.050 cm,lc = 30 cm,
and N = 500 turns. Assume the value of the relative permeability,μr = 70,000 for core material.
(a) Find the Core ReluctanceRcand Gap Reluctance Rg. For the condition that the magnetic
circuit is operating with Bc= 1.0 T, find (b) the flux and (c) the current i.
[Ans. (a) Rc=3785 AT/Wb, Rg= 442321.3 AT/Wb (b) 9×10-4 Wb (c) 0.8 A]

2. A 680 turns coil is wound on the central limb of the cast steel frame as shown in Fig. 2. A total
flux of 1.6 mWb is required in the gap, find what current is required. Assume that the gap
density is uniform and that all lines pass straight across the gap. Dimensions are in cms.

Table 1: B-H values for cast steel

H (AT/m) 500 600 800 900
B (Wb/m2) 0.5 0.6 0.9 1
[Ans. 1.95 A]
3. The magnetic circuit of Fig. 3 has a cast steel core with dimensions as shown. It is required to
establish a flux of 0.8mWb in the air gap of the central limb. Determine the mmf of the exciting
coil, if for the core material μr= ∞. Neglect fringing.
[Ans: 1343.98 AT].

4. In the magnetic circuit shown in Fig. 4, the area of cross section of the central limb is 12cm2
and that of each outer limb (A to B) is 6 cm2. A coil current of 0.5 A produces 0.5 mWb in the
air-gap. Find the relative permeability of the core material.
[Ans: 7627.51]
5. Required no load ratio in a single phase 50-Hz core type transformer is 6000/250 V. Find the
number of turns in each winding if the flux is to be about 0.06 Wb.
Ans: [20, 480]
(NOTE: LV winding turns may be considered as 20 instead of 18.7 for some advantages in
winding manufacturing in practice. Hence, HV winding turns are also accordingly considered).
6. For the transformer shown in Fig. 5, NEF = 600, NAB =150 and NCD =300 turns. Also the load
resistances RAB= 30Ω and RCD= 15Ω. The voltage applied to the primary is 16V sinusoidal.
Considering the transformer to be ideal, calculate
(a) Total load impedance reflected to the primary.
(b) Total current drawn from the supply.
[Ans: (a) 53.3 Ω, (b) 0.3 A]

7. Reconnect the windings of a 1-phase, 3 kVA, 240/120 V, 50 Hz transformer so that it can

supply a load at 330 V from a 110 V supply.
(a) Show the connection
(b) Determine the maximum kVA the reconnected transformer can deliver (for the given supply
voltage).
[Ans: 4.125 kVA]

8. Calculate the values of R0, X0, Req1, and Xeq2 in the diagram for the equivalent circuit of a 1-
phase, 4kVA 200/400 V, 50 Hz transformer (see Fig. 6) of which the following are the test
results:

Open-Circuit: 200V, 0.7A, 70W on low voltage primary side.

Short-Circuit: 15V, 10A, 80W in the high voltage (secondary) side.
[Ans: 571, 330, 0.2 and 0.317]

9. For the equivalent circuit in Fig. 6, assume Req1 = 0.16Ω, Xeq1 = 0.7Ω, R0 = 400Ω, X0 = 231Ω
and load impedance = 5.96 +j 4.44 Ω. All values are referred to primary side and the primary
input voltage (V1) is 200V. If the ratio of secondary to primary is 10, find (a) the secondary
terminal voltage (b) primary current and (c) the efficiency
[Ans: 1857.5 V, 25.9A, 94.9%]

10. Calculate the regulation of transformer in which the ohmic loss is 1% of the rated output and
the reactance drop is 5% of the rated voltage, when the P.F. is (a) 0.8 lagging, (b) unity (c) 0.8
leading.
[Ans: 3.8%, 1% and -2.2%]
