Looking Back to Your Lesson

You have learned how to multiply decimal numbers. Now, you will

learn how to estimate the product of decimal numbers with reasonable results. First,
recall rounding off decimal numbers to the place of the underlined digit.

1. 48.5 2. 24.4 3. 9.6 4. 246.3 5. 123.86

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

What do you think the term estimation means? Why is estimation

necessary in the real world?

Estimation is finding an approximate answer, finding out about how

much an answer is, an amount that is close to another. Being able to estimate your
answer is a useful skill. Not only will it help you decide if your answer is reasonable
when doing homework problems or answering test questions, it can prove to be
helpful in everyday life. When shopping, you can estimate how much money you have
spent, the tip for a restaurant bill, or the price of an item on sale.

By rounding and then doing a quick calculation, you will at least know
if you are close to the exact answer.

Study this example:

Estimate the product of 56.71 x 3.25

Follow these STEPS:

1 Round off each 2 Multiply the 3 Compare your estimate

decimal factor rounded factors. with your product to
to the greatest or verify that your answer is
highest place value. reasonable.
56.71 60
56.71 60 56.71 60 x 3.25 x 3
x 3.25 x 3 28355 180
x 3.25 x 3
11342
180 +17013
184.4075

Therefore, the estimated product is 180.

Analyze this problem : (Communication and Character)

For their fund-raising to buy food for the needy and the most affected
families in their barangay during the Enhanced Community Quarantine,
Carlo and his brother sold packages of cookies at Php11.75 a package.

If they sold 210 packages, about how much did they get? Is the
answer reasonable or not? Solve.

Answer the following questions before proceeding to the steps.

• How do you find Joseph and his brother in the story?
• Should the brother’s traits be imitated? Why or why not?
Estimate the product of 11.75 x 210
Follow these STEPS: (critical thinking)

1 Round off each 2 Multiply the 3 Compare your estimate

decimal factor rounded factors. with your product to verify
to the greatest/highest that your answer is
place value. reasonable.

Php11.75 Php12.00 Php11.75 Php12.00 Php11.75 Php12.00

x 210 x 200
x 210 x 200 x 210 x 200 000 Php2 400.00
Php2 400.00 1175
2350
Php2467.50

The estimated product is Php2 400. The answer is reasonable because the actual
amount of money they got is closer to the estimated amount.
.
estimated amount of money is lower than the

Activity 2
Directions: Analyze, then give the correct solution for the problem below.

The following are some items that Carlo and his

brother need to buy for their donations to their
barangay:

Instant Noodles- Php 6.75 Sardines-Php19.25

Sugar-Php49.50/kg Coffee-Php7.75
Rice-Php 35.05/kg

*About how much money must they have to

be able to buy :

1. 20 packs of instant noodles

2. 2.5 kg of sugar
3. 15 kg of rice
4. 5 cans of sardines
5. 10 small packs of coffee

Activity 3
Directions: Answer the questions below. Refer to the story problem inside the box.

Being a mother, Aling Rosa wants to ensure her

family’s good health during the time of a pandemic, so
she buys healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables and
fish.

She bought 0.81 kg of fish. She placed 0.25 of it

in the refrigerator and cooked the rest. About how much
kilogram of fish she refrigerated?

1. Who is the main character in the story problem? ___________________________

2. What is the problem asking us to find? _____________________________________
3. How can we solve for the answer? __________________________________________
4. What is the clue word? _____________________________________________________
5. Solve for the answer. ______________________________________________________

Mathematics 5

REMEMBER

To estimate the products of decimal numbers with reasonable

results:
1. round off each decimal factor to the greatest/highest place value;
2. multiply the rounded factors; and
3. compare your estimate with your product to verify that your
answer is reasonable.
• Estimation is useful when you do not need an exact answer. You need
check to be sure an exact answer is close to being correct, estimating
decimal works just the same as estimating with
whole numbers.
• Rounding the values to be multiplied, it helps to round to numbers
that are easy to work with.

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

• To Parents/: You can offer guidance and review the

completed work. But resist the urge to provide the correct
answers yourself. Learning from mistakes is part of the
process and you do not want to take this away from your
child.

Read and Solve.

1. A kilogram of banana costs Php32.50. Aling Rosa estimated that she would have
to pay Php60.00 for 1.5 kg. If the actual cost is Php48.75, did she overestimate or
underestimate? ______________________________________

2. Raffy stays fit by doing 51 push-ups each day. Estimate how many push-ups he
can do in 6.5 days? ______________________________________

3. Arki multiplied 21.4 by 9.6 and got a product of 205. 44. Use estimation to
determine whether her answer is reasonable or unreasonable.

Read: God-Given Talents

Each of us has God-given talent or ability. We must use the

talents the Creator gave us, to show that we appreciate His works.
He will give us more opportunities to use them in return. God-given
talent or ability is either innate (not learned) or that is so
extraordinary that it could only have come from a higher power. An
example of God-given talent is the skill that the best mural artist
has within his field. Like Russell, he was given 0.875 liter of paint
to finish the lettering of the murals in the Math room. He was able
to consume 0.75 of the paint. About how much paint did he use?

Answer the following questions.

1. What are God’s gift to us?
_________________________________________________________________________
2. What should we do with our talents?
_________________________________________________________________________
3. What is your God-given talent?
_________________________________________________________________________
4. What shall we find in this problem?
_________________________________________________________________________
5. What strategy will you use to give closer estimate of the paint that Russell used?
Show your solution and write the answer that is much closer to the actual product.
