Executive Summary
Rationale
This is private investment by Computex Training Institute for the infrastructure of a new
Network at 2 Grenfell Street Adelaide. This is an investment to attract students and
businesses to train in their facility.

Business Drivers
Shrivelled Peripherals is a company that believes in taking a holistic approach to the
Computex Network Infrastructure Installation Project. There are many aspects to any project,
and this project is no exception. Our philosophy is to create an environment that is
conducive to creativity, and one way we achieve this is by using the brainstorming technique.
This technique generates more ideas than working individually. Every aspect of the project is
given as much careful consideration as the next.

Finding a reputable company was a major driver for Shrivelled Peripherals. Networking
amongst people in the business played a big role in the decision of choosing a company to
setup the server and install the software correctly.

Quality for hardware and software took precedence over quantity. The components and
software had to be of quality and reputable in brand and name.

A pre-built server was considered imperative due to warranty and after sales service. The
company we went with offers a warranty that includes the server being assembled and
tested, standard service of 3 years limited parts, and lifetime labour warranty.

Buying a server pre-built also meant that there wouldn’t be any conflicts between the
software and hardware, as the company only install compatible software that runs on the
chosen components.

Sustainability/Scalability had to be thought of in the decision process, as the company,

whether or not they were to grow in the future, needed a reliable system that worked now
and in the future, that could support changes to the network and infrastructure.

Key Objectives
Specific: The budget is $10,000 to purchase a Server that is appropriate for Computex
Training Centre and to design an infrastructure for the Network. It is a prerequisite of
Computex that the Server operating system is Novell Netware 6.5. Also stipulated is that
Windows XP with Microsoft Office 2003 are run on all client workstations. Computex’s
network needs to be created in such a way that all Administrators who will be accessing it
will clearly understand the workings of it in order to maintain it efficiently.

7
• Measured: We will deliver what has been quoted to Computex Training Centre.

• Achievable: Time management, team communication, availability of stock,

implementation, availability of skilled tradesman.

• Relevant: We will be making a profit of a mark-up of %10 on the total project

expenditure.

• Timed: The following time schedule has been agreed upon by all parties

Visit the Computex training centre to gather all the necessary information
Week 1 in order to design the building floor plan in Visio to show what the layout of
the centre will look like
Research specifications for a Server Class PC which is compatible with

8
Benefits
Computex receives a state of the art network infrastructure that will benefit trainers,
administration staff, IT staff and students.

Impacts
How the implementation of a server that is hardware and software compatible, as well as
being expandable for future use, is imperative for the success of the business running’s.

Not only will the server affect the students and teaching staff’s ability to do their work, but it
will also affect the management, finance and accounts department’s activities and
capabilities, because the processes will have to run smoothly.

1 Integration Management

1.1 Methodology
Onsite visual inspection on a daily and weekly basis by an onsite manager, who will report
back to the project manager their findings.

1.2 Change Control

Authorised changes will be addressed and brought to a meeting with the key players,
whereupon an agreement would be met before making the changes. These changes will be
entered into an amendment document that would be signed and dated.

1.3 Performance Reporting

Written amendments, log books

1.4 Audit
A weekly inspection by Computex management

1.5 Dependencies
• Delivery of the server

• Software compatibility

• Reliability of stakeholders to achieve their roles successfully in the project

9
• Communication between the stakeholders

• Communication between distributors

• Maintaining time schedules

2 Scope Management
2.1 Exclusions
• Windows XP with Microsoft Office 2003 installed on client workstations not included
in the server budget

• Implementation of Computex network not included in the server budget

• A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is not included in the server budget

• External Tape Drive for data backup not included in the server budget

• Keyboard and mouse are not included in the server budget

• A monitor is not included in the server budget

2.2 Handover
A document signed off by all necessary parties during each stage of the project’s
progression to ensure each stage has been met and delivered in order to reach the target
destination.

3 Milestones
3.1 Milestones
• Attain the requirements for the infrastructure of the new network

• Research the server’s requirements

• Find a server and retailer/supplier that meet Computex’s requirements and fits in with
the budgetary constraints.

• Implement network

4 Cost Management
4.1 Budget
$10,000 for a server that meets Computex’s requirements
10
4.2 Estimating methodology
On current available prices

Pre-built server with all the necessary requirements to run Novell 6.5 Operating System

4.3 Confidence level

Price of Server

AUD $9219.85

The specs are:

Operating System: Novell, SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 11

Socket 1366 Xeon 5500 Series Server Processors: INTEL, 2 x Xeon X5570 Quad-Core
Processor 2.93GHz

* I have chosen to go with 2 Quad-Core processors to ensure scalability for the future.

DDR3-1333 ECC Registered DIMM Memory: Kingston, 12GB (6 x 2GB) ValueRAM Dual-
Rank PC3-10600 DDR3 1333GHz CL9 SDRAM DIMM

*As with the processors, I have added 12GB of RAM to ensure future success of the system.

PCI Express x16 Video Cards: XFX, Radeon HD 4350 600MHz, 512MB DDR2 1000MHz,
PCIe x16, VGA+DVI, HDTV-Out,

*As this is a server and not a games console, I have gone with a middle of the range Video
card.

Network Card: Integrated Network Controller

*The integrated network Controller is Netware Compatible

SAS Hard Drives: 5 x Seagate, 450GB Cheetah 15K.6, SAS, 15K RPM, 16MB Cache 3.5-
inch.

*As RAID 5 will be implemented, I have gone with 5 hard drives, so as to compensate for the
33% loss of data capacity, which will work out to being a loss of approximately one HDD.
However, due to Computex’s Adelaide branch being a small to medium Enterprise (SME), I
have gone for higher RPMs over data capacity. The Server can, however, have more HDD
added to it for expansion purposes.

SAS RAID Controllers: HighPoint, RocketRAID 2640x4 SAS/SATA 3 Gb/s RAID Controller,
4-port, Level 5, PCIe x4, Full-height/Low-profile

Storage Subsystem Configuration: RAID, RAID 5 (fault tolerance) min 3 hard drives & RAID
controller required
11
DVD Burner Drive: Sony, AD-7241S Black 24x DVD+-R/RW Dual-Layer Burner w/
Lightscribe, SATA

Sound Card: Integrated Audio Controller

Warranty: Assembled & Tested, Standard Service (3 Years Limited Parts, Lifetime Labour
Warranty)
