Past Continuous Tense

The document describes the past continuous tense in Croatian. [1] It is used to emphasize an ongoing past action or to describe a past action that was interrupted by another past action expressed using "when". [2] It can also describe two simultaneous past actions, such as "While I was cooking, Jack was watching TV". [3] The past continuous is formed using was/were + verb + -ing. Examples of affirmative, negative, and interrogative forms are provided. Exercises in using the past continuous tense follow.

Past Continuous Tense

- prošlo glagolsko vrijeme

Uporaba:

1. Koristi se za prošlu radnju čije trajanje želimo naglasiti.

I was playing soccer yesterday.

2. Služi nam da bismo prikazali neku prošlu radnju, koju je prekinula neka druga
radnja iz prošlosti. Da bismo to izrazili koristimo riječ „When“ (kada). Druga
radnja koja je prekinula prvu radnju uvijek se izražava u prošlom vremenu.

He was reading when he suddenly heard some noise.

3. To je prošlo glagolsko vrijeme kojim možemo prikazati dvije radnje koje su se


događale istovremeno.

While I was cooking, Jack was watching TV.

Tvorba: was / were + verb + -ing

Affirmative Negative Interrogative

I was playing I was not playing Was I playing?

You were playing You were not Were you playing?

He was playing He wasn't playing Was he playing?

We were playing We weren't playing Were we playing?
