Chapter One

1. Introduction
Automation is today’s fact, where more things are being completed every day automatically,
usually the basic tasks of turning on or off certain devices and beyond, either remotely or in close
proximity.

The idea of the smart home has been around for decades, but only recently has technology started
to catch up with our imagination. Science fiction writers have long imagined what the homes of
the future would be like, and finally these dreams are becoming a reality. From kettles to
thermostats, fridges to smoke detectors, the internet is increasingly finding its way into more and
more of our everyday household appliances.

As technology continues to get smarter, so do the homes that feature it. Previously independent
devices can now be connected over the internet, allowing us greater control over what is
happening in our homes, even when we’re not there.

A smart home is a home where in all man’s comfort, entertainment, and esthetic needs are
governed by technology. For example, ambience parameters like lighting/temperature needs are
made intelligent to sense the need and provide. In a smart home, a person can have all necessary
services right from wake up alarms to personalized calendars with essential reminders to diet
needs to medical support available to his disposal with an ease of a click of buttons or gestures.
This is possible because of the advancement of wide variety of sensor technologies and high
processors technologies.

Actually smart home is the collection of different technology working with one another in an
integrated and combined ways. Such elements of technology involves air conditioning, access
control and security gadgets, lighting control system, entertainment system and many more.
Generally, this technology is very important due to its benefit in reducing effort and energy, as
well as increasing the security of home and facilitating remote control (Rouse, 2018) [1].

1|Page
1.1 General Motivation

Smart technology has led to the connectivity of nearly everything in our daily lives. As time
progresses and technology improves, the very likely scenario is the continued integration of
internet connectivity in nearly all electronic devices.
The reason I am motivated to write this article is that there are many disabled ,physical
challenged and old people who are ineffective in performing their day to day work, with the
development of this technology it would be a boon for such people .
In general there are some initiatives that leads to home automation this day:

 Issue to control once own home from remote.

 The need to provide comfort, convenience and quality of life for people residents.
 Security issues of what is happening in home.
 Lack of efficiency of performing household activity.
 To reduce effort and time wastage carrying household activity.
 Health problem issue surrounding the home.

1.2 Goal of the Paper

This seminar paper aims to present a systematic review of existing software, hardware, and
communications control systems for smart homes. It gives an overview of the status of smart
home technologies by discussing the main relevant features and pointing out the strengths and
weakness of technology.

1.3 Overview of Previous Technology

The first smart homes were ideas, not actual structures. For decades, science fiction has explored
the idea of home automation. Prolific writers, such as Ray Bradbury, imagined a future where
homes were interactive, and seemingly ran themselves. In Bradbury’s cautionary short story,
“There Will Come Soft Rains” he describes an automated home that continues to function even
after humans have died out. It’s all well and frightening, until you consider the actual benefits of
home automation, and then the idea becomes more comforting than chilling.

1901 – 1920 - The invention of home appliances – Although home appliances aren’t what we’d
consider “smart,” they were an incredible achievement in the early twentieth century. These
achievements began with the first engine-powered vacuum cleaner in 1901. A more practical
electricity-powered vacuum was invented in 1907. Throughout two decades refrigerators would
be invented, as well as clothes dryers, washing machines, irons, toasters, and so much more.
(Hendricks, 2014) [2]

1966 – 1967 - ECHO IV and the Kitchen Computer – Although it was never commercially
sold, the ECHO IV was the first smart device. This clever device could compute shopping lists,
control the home’s temperature and turn appliances on and off. The Kitchen Computer,
developed a year later, could store recipes, but had the unfortunate tagline, “If she can only cook
as well as Honeywell can computer” and therefore sold no models.

The first industry standard for home Automation was X10 in 1975. X10 helps devices connect to
each other primarily through power line wiring, radio frequency, and wireless-based protocols.
Today Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Insteon are also leading protocols for Home Automation. These new
industry standards rely more heavily on modern wireless technology, like mesh-networking. All of
these systems are very complicated. Simply put, they use electricity, radio waves and wireless
technology to send messages to and from devices

1998 – Early 2000s: Smart Homes – Smart homes, or home automation, began to increase in
popularity in the early 2000s. As such, different technology began to emerge. Smart homes
suddenly became a more affordable option, and therefore a viable technology for consumers.
Domestic technologies, home networking, and other gadgets began to appear on store shelves.

1.3 Related Works

Internet of Things

IoT is the interconnection of devices via the internet, allowing them all to send and receive data,
without the need for human interaction. Smart home is a significant part of IoT, where internet-
connected appliances and devices are automatically controlled, often with a mobile phone
How IoT is used in smart homes?
IoT home automation is the ability to control domestic appliances by electronically controlled,
internet-connected systems. It may include setting complex heating and lighting systems in
advance and setting alarms and home security controls, all connected by a central hub and remote-
controlled by a mobile app
What is the impact of IoT in smart homes?
IoT has changed the way we carry out simple tasks, and it has made our lives convenient since we
can control devices around us by the touch of a screen on our smartphones. Before IoT, people
would physically get up to do things around the house, such as turn on the water heater or turn the
lights on.
What is the difference between IoT and home automation?
Home automation and IoT also differ in the degree of data protection: a home automation system
is closed, i.e. all the connected systems communicate only with each other and store the data in a
more protected and difficult to violate environment, on the other hand, IoT is a macro-term that
encompasses all the technologies capable of collecting data via the internet or from the surrounding
environment and processing it to optimize its functioning, to carry out its task more effectively and
to simplify life for every user.
Internet of Things uses open but independent devices in your home: they interact with the outside
world, but not directly with each other, and therefore are generally more specialized and dedicated.
Consequently, home automation and the Internet of Things respond to two different needs.
[3]The Internet of Things, commonly known as IoT, refers to any device that’s connected to the
Internet that isn’t normally; for example, a smart light bulb that you can turn on and off via an app.
All home automation devices are IoT devices, which can be automated to trigger one another. So
while IoT refers to the devices themselves, home automation is what you can do with the IoT
devices to make your life just a tad bit easier.

2 Literature Review
I have reviewed the literature related to my seminar topic that has been done for last few years in
order to find out work carried out by various researchers. There are many systems for remote
monitoring and control designed as commercial products or experimental research platforms.

Internet monitoring is one of the common approaches for remote monitoring. Many researchers
have worked in field of Internet based remote monitoring. (Saito et al., 2000) developed home
gateway system for interconnecting home network consisting of IEEE 1394 AV network and
X10 power line home automation network with Internet. This provided remote access functions
from Internet for digital AV appliances like Digital Video Camera, Digital VCR connected to
IEEE 1394 network and home appliances like TV, desk lamp, electric fan connected to X10
controller. (Al-Ali and Al-Rousan, 2004) developed Java based home automation system via
World Wide Web. The home appliances were controlled from ports of embedded system board
connected to PC based server at home. (Alkar and Buhur, 2005) implemented Internet based
wireless flexible solution where home appliances are connected to slave node. The slave nodes
communicate with master node through RF and master node has serial RS232 link with PC
server (Kadam, 2016) [4].

Chapter Three

3 Detail Description of Smart Home

[5]The description of smart home varies to the context of where it is used. There are mainly two
different ways of expression by either narrow sense or generalized sense.

In narrow sense, a smart home is more sketched as home automation or assistive demotic. It
refers the use of computer and information technology to control devices and features in a home
like environment such as lighting, entertainment systems, temperature, and so on. Smart homes
use the electronic networking technology to integrate various devices and appliances found in
almost all homes so that an entire home can be controlled centrally or remotely as a single
machine. Inside each of these machines, integrating all devices and appliances allows them to
communicate with one and each other through a home controller, there by simultaneously
enabling control of various machines in preprogrammed scenarios or operating modes.

In generalized sense, smart home can be any of one “cell” that deployed with human-machine
and/or machine-machine interfaced devices, with capability of monitoring and controlling
automatically or remotely, as well as communication capability to other similar “cells” or the
system for monitoring and controlling. An example can be the usage of sensing system for
climate monitoring: deploying different sensors/detectors for temperature, moisture, soil, air,
water etc., and sending the sensed data periodically to the server. Advances in wireless
communications enabled multiple sensor devices to send and receive data over long distance,
which promotes continuous climate monitoring as well as environment management furthermore
realized in anywhere at any time necessary.

In summary of both narrow and generalized senses, the smart home could employ a general
definition: a cell with independent devices functioning into an integrated system under
centralized control remotely or automatically, and able to communicate with other similar cells
or command systems via shared protocols. In this definition, a smart home is rather called as a
“smart home cell” in this study to avoid the narrow understanding of a home-like only (sidis,
2019) [6].

 Essential Elements of a Smart Home

Smart home consists of following Elements:

Single Functioning Devices which are independently operating to control each of their own
functions, for example temperature, moisture, security, lighting, shielding, energy, entertainment,
air quality, soil quality, water quality and so on. They can be various sensors, detectors, meters,
switches etc. able to be operated under remote or automatic control.

 Smart security

Smart Doorbells: One of the most common and security-focused components of a smart security
system are smart doorbell cameras. These incorporate a small camera in the doorbell button.
When someone rings the bell or approaches the door, depending on the system the doorbell sends
an alert to your phone and activates the camera, letting you see a clear picture of who’s there, no
matter where you happen to be.

Doorbell cameras are very useful, and there are several great options, like Ring Video Doorbell,
Vivian Doorbell Camera, and August Doorbell Cam. These are features you’ll want to look for in
a video doorbell.

 High-resolution video
 Motion sensing
 Two-way audio
Smart Locks: Smart locks look like they've been plucked from a science fiction movie, but
they're real and surprisingly convenient. They can pair with a mobile app on your phone to allow
keyless entry and remote access to lock, unlock and monitor your front door through the app or
even just a voice command.
There are a couple different styles of smart locks you can choose from. The first is more
traditional, with a number pad or touchscreen where you input a code that unlocks your door.
Some examples include the Samsung SHS-P718 Digital Door Lock and the Schrage Camelot
Touchscreen Deadbolt.

7|Page
The second type forgoes the keypad and screen entirely, and it instead relies on an app on your
smartphone to handle the locking and unlocking duties. Examples of these include the August
Smart Lock and the Lockton Bolt.

Figure 1. Image showing smart home lock

Smart Cameras: Smart cameras take the traditional security camera concept and turn the dial up
to eleven. These cameras incorporate Wi-Fi connections that allow them to be viewed and
controlled remotely using a smartphone app. Many can also upload the footage to the Cloud for
storage, eliminating the need for a potentially complicated on-site storage setup.

Figure 2. Figure Showing Smart Camera

8|Page
 Smart Thermostats

Many smart home security systems include smart thermostats. These handy devices can help you
save energy which is good for both the environment and your wallet. Like other smart home
features, they connect to your home Wi-Fi network and are controlled by an associated app on
your smartphone.

The neat thing about many of these thermostats is that they learn your climate preferences such as
if you like it warmer in the morning and even what times of day you’re home and away. The
result is that they can work proactively to keep your home at the most comfortable temperature
for you without you having to lift a finger.

Figure 3.Image showing smart thermostat

 Smart Lights

Smart lighting combines convenience and enhanced security. These are Wi-Fi enabled LED
lightbulbs that can be controlled from a smartphone app. You can turn the bulbs on or off either
manually or on a schedule dim the bulbs, or choose their color from a seemingly endless array of
hues. And all this can be done from anywhere. You don’t need to worry about whether you
remembered to leave a light on before heading out on vacation.

9|Page
There are a lot of solid choices for smart lighting, but two of the most popular are Philips Hue
and Belkin’s WeMo.

Figure 4 smart lights

10 | P a g e
 Smart Smoke Alarms

This device takes the traditional smoke alarm and brings it into the digital age, with Wi-Fi
connectivity and the ability to communicate and pinpoint exactly where a fire is located. The
really nice thing about these alarms is that they can send the alerts to your phone so you can be
aware of any issues even when you’re away from home. You can also easily silence them in the
event of a false alarm who hasn’t set off their smoke alarms at least once while cooking?

Top picks in this category include the Google Nest ProtectNest Prand the First Alert One link.
Both detect carbon monoxide in addition to smoke and alert you in a human voice rather than a
screeching alarm tone.

Centralized Control Unit: of the cell, like control panels or smart mobile devices (phones,
tablets or others with relative control application) which can control all single functioning
devices deployed in one cell, thus an “inner” communication unit. The control is conducted via
remote (Bluetooth, infrared or other RF approaches), mostly the wireless network (Wi-Fi) as the
first prioritized choice.

 Smart Home Hub

A smart home hub is hardware containing software attached to it that connects devices on a
home automation network and controls communications among them. Smart home hubs, which
connect either locally or to the cloud, are useful for internet of things (IoT) devices that use the
ZigBee or Z-Wave protocols or Bluetooth, rather than Wi-Fi.

Figure 5. Image showing central controlling unit

11 | P a g e
Shared Protocols: interacting among one cell and ‘outsiders’, e.g. other smart home cells or
commanding systems (control centers, data processing centers etc.), through which one cell can
exchange message/data with each other and the center compatibly, thus an “inter”
communication way. By this setting, a smart home cell and other similar cells can compose a
programmed controlled network and be utilized in anywhere at any time with any manners
commanded by one center. Operates on the IEEE 802.15.4 specification

In another word, the protocol setting becomes one mandatory element of a smart home cell being
utilized widely and wisely, for instance operated in the context of Internet of Things (IoT). These
protocols need to be agreed and programmed prior to the data exchange, unless one smart home
cell is designed to be in isolate running.

Based on the above, it is the time to try drawing a system view which demonstrates the smart
home, the outsiders and the inner and inter communications

Figure 6.A system of smart home cells and commanding center

On the figure above, single functioning devices of one cell are demonstrated by color boxes,
among which centralized control unit is shown at the middle. The inner communication inside of

12 | P a g e
the cell is presented by black arrows, whilst inter communications with other cells and the
commanding center by blue dual-direction arrows.

 How does Home Automation work

[3]Home automation works via a network of devices that are connected to the Internet through
different communication protocols, i.e Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee, and others. Through electronic
interfaces, the devices can be managed remotely through controllers, either a voice assistant like
Alexa or Google Assistant or an app. Many of these IoT devices have sensors that monitor
changes in motion, temperature and light so the user can gain information about the device’s
surroundings.
Home automation works on three levels:

Monitoring: Monitoring means that users can check in on their devices remotely through an
app. For example, someone could view their live feed from a smart security camera.
Control: Control means that the user can control these devices remotely, like panning a security
camera to see more of a living space.
Automation: Finally, automation means setting up devices to trigger one another, like having a
smart siren go off whenever an armed security camera detects motion.
 How To Set Up Home Automation

[3]Setting up your home automation system is actually a lot less complicated than it may seem.
You can either wing it and buy a smart home product that sounds like it’s up your alley, or set up
your smart home more strategically by following these easy steps:
Smart home ecosystem: First, choose which “smart home ecosystem” you want to be a part of,
and by that i mean Amazon or Google, most likely. This will determine which voice assistant you
use, which will then determine which IoT devices will work with your system. Of course, you can
use products that work with both Alexa and Google Assistant,
Control protocol: Next, decide which protocol you want your devices to communicate with, be it
WiFi, Z-Wave, ZigBee or others. If you’re just starting off with a smart home, WiFi will be your
most straightforward option, as most IoT devices work with WiFi.
Types of products: Next, go room by room and decide which types of products you’ll need, be it
security cameras, light bulbs, locks, coffee makers, and the like. Our buying guide below can help!

13 | P a g e
Brands: Then, do some research as to the best smart home companies; the reviews on our website
go over the most popular brands like Ring, Nest, SimpliSafe, Alder Security, and more.
Devices: Now it’s time to actually buy your IoT devices.

3.1 Advantage of Smart Home

[7]The benefits of home automation are many. The first and often most persuasive benefit of
home automation is the convenience factor. There is just nothing like being able to communicate
with your home remotely, from wherever you are. A smart home is truly the next level in
convenience and customization. However, not to be glossed over are some of the ancillary
benefits of home automation. These include:

 Safety

The ability to control small appliances and lighting with your fingertips anywhere you are will
add safety in your home. You can make sure appliances are off when it’s needed to be off and
on when it’s needed to be on.

 Security

The ability to lock the door through your phone is one of the greatest benefits of home
automation. This will give you peace of mind knowing that the door is close and not guessing.
The fact that you can be alerted each time someone enters your home also allows you to monitor
who is entering your home at all times, especially when you are not there. CCTV surveillance
camera is one of the biggest security system achievement which used to check whether our home
is under thief.

 Convenience

The ability to control everything with your fingertips is very convenient. You never leave the
house without your wallet, keys and your smart phone. With our smart phone always with us,
we can easily monitor our home and control everything with just touch of a finger.

 Saves Time

14 | P a g e
Since we are living in a very fast-paced environment, we don’t even have time to worry about
our home. With home automation, we can save time going back to our home and make sure
everything is order, like if the kids close the door from school or turn on the lights when you get
home.

 Save Money

This is the biggest advantage of home automation. With the ability to control the light, whether
dimming or turning on/off on specific time will saves homeowner a great ton of money. You
can save money through household temperature, with proper automation in window shades and
automated thermostat. In addition, you can save gas, by not driving back home if you forgot to
turn off appliances or lock the door.

3.2 Disadvantage of Smart Home

Living in a home with smart home technology provides you with convenient features from a
central location. It is true that there are several advantages of having a smart home, but there are
a few disadvantages of having a smart home. Here are a few things to consider before you invest
in smart home technology:

 Steep Learning Curve

Learning how to operate smart home technology is not difficult if you are a tech-savvy
individual. If your technology skills are not advanced, you will have to take time to learn how to
use the technology. This may require spending a significant amount of time consulting
instruction manuals that teach you how to properly use the device.

 Internet Reliability

Since smart homes rely heavily on the strength of your internet connectivity, your system could
experience problems on days when your internet signals are weak. Poor internet strength could
cause your technology to fail or stall.

15 | P a g e
 Cyber Attacks

Smart home technology is vulnerable to hacking and cyber-attacks. If your smart home
technology is hacked, strangers can remotely unlock your doors, change your thermostat, turn off
your lights or disable your security alarm.

3.3 Application Areas of Smart Home

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC): It is possible to have remote control of all
home energy monitors over the internet incorporating a simple and friendly user interface [6].

Lighting control system: A "smart" network that incorporates communication between various
lighting system inputs and outputs, using one or more central computing devices. Lighting
control systems are widely used on both indoor and outdoor lighting of commercial, industrial,
and residential spaces. Lighting control systems serve to provide the right amount of light where
and when it is needed.

Occupancy-aware control system: It is possible to sense the occupancy of the home using
smart meters and environmental sensors like CO 2 sensors, which can be integrated into the
building automation system to trigger automatic responses for energy efficiency and building
comfort applications.

Home robots and security: A household security system integrated with a home automation
system can provide additional services such as remote surveillance of security cameras over the
Internet, or access control and central locking of all perimeter doors and windows.

Indoor positioning systems (IPS): An indoor positioning system (IPS) is a system used to
locate objects or people inside a building using lights, radio waves, magnetic fields, acoustic
signals, or other sensory information. There are several commercial systems on the market, but
there is no standard for an IPS system.

Home automation for the elderly and disabled: The form of home automation focuses on
making it possible for older adults and people with disabilities to remain at home, safe and
comfortable. Home automation is becoming a viable option for older adults and people with
disabilities who would prefer to stay in the comfort of their homes rather than move to a

16 | P a g e
healthcare facility. This field uses much of the same technology and equipment as home
automation for security, entertainment, and energy conservation but tailors it towards older
adults and people with disabilities.
3.4 Example of Smart Home Technology
Amazon Echo/ Echo Dot: These excellent speakers allow you to do everything effortlessly.
Integrate them with Amazon Alexa, a device that manages music playback, to do lists, traffic
information, and other real-time data. It will turn the Echo on in an instant. Order a Big Mac without
lifting your phone receiver. The Echo is the perfect digital assistant. Get it to turn your music on
automatically. It connects with other appliances as well. You can program it to turn on your coffee
maker or your microwave oven.
Lighting – Smart lighting systems are available for indoors and outdoor use. Smart lighting adds
automation, remote control, and other convenience features. Upgrading your lights to smart
lights is one of the easiest and most practical smart-home changes you can make in your
residence. In addition to being able to be controlled remotely and customized, smart lighting
systems detect when occupants are in the room and adjust lighting as needed. Smart lightbulbs
can also regulate themselves based on daylight availability.

Nest Learning Thermostat: The device is based on a machine learning algorithm: for the first
weeks users have to regulate the thermostat in order to provide the reference data set. The
thermostat can then learn people's schedule, at which temperature they are used to and when.
Using built-in sensors and phones' locations, it can shift into energy saving mode when it realizes
nobody is at home (Noble, 2018) [8]
3.5 Evaluation Result of Smart Home

A smart home is any home that includes automated, Internet of Things devices connected to
mobile applications
Smart homes allow you to have greater control of your energy use, all while automating things
like adjusting temperature, turning on and off lights, opening and closing window treatments. Its
objective is to improve the quality of life and convenience in the home, as well as residents'
safety and security. Smart home applications also often ensure more efficient use of energy.

17 | P a g e
On the other smart home technology is very costy , rely heavily on the strength of internet
connectivity, and its diffcult to understand how technology works.so its better to consider these
things before using smart home technology.
Chapter Four

4. Conclusion
Smart home is an emerging technology that changes peoples lifestyle into more convenience and
comfortable. A smart home contains a connection between wireless communication, sensors,
monitoring and tracking.
Smart homes are a huge system that includes multiple technologies and applications that can be
used to provide security and control of the home easily. Components of smart home such as
security system, air conditioning, lightening control system, smart camera and central hub that
used to control attached device on it.
Generally, smart home system is a system which allow peoples to have absolute and complete
control of its home whether it’s near or from remote area.
