How Does DHCP and BOOTP Handle Multiple Subnets

DHCP and BOOTP allow devices to automatically obtain IP address and network configuration information from a server. For networks with multiple subnets, multiple DHCP/BOOTP servers can be configured, one per subnet. Alternatively, routers can be configured with BOOTP forwarding to redirect requests from one subnet to the DHCP/BOOTP server in another subnet. The HP J3288A and J3289A hubs are compatible with both DHCP and BOOTP protocols for automatic network configuration.

How

does  DHCP  and  BOOTP  handle  multiple  subnets?

A Bootp server requires some configuration. It allows a device to obtain its configuration
information, such as the IP Address and Subnet Mask, in one message, reducing the demand on
the network. The Bootp protocol is designed for a network in which each host has a permanent
network connection.
DHCP is more suitable in environments where the number of IP addresses needed exceeds the
number available.  The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) manages the allocation of
TCP/IP configuration information by automatically assigning IP addresses. With DHCP you can
configure the hub to automatically retrieve the IP address with no configuration required on
either the hub or the DHCP server. In dynamic mode, the address is used by the device for a
specified period of time. The time period depends on the situation; one device may only need the
address for an hour, while another device may use the same address for several days.It also
allows a device to obtain its configuration information, such as the IP Address and Subnet Mask,
in one message, reducing the demand on the network.
For the situations where there is more than one LAN, each with its own subnet number, there are
two ways. First of all, you can set up a seperate server on each subnet. Secondly, a feature of
some routers known as "BOOTP forwarding" to forward DHCP or BOOTP requests to a server
on another subnet and to forward the replies back to the client. The part of such a router (or
server acting as a router) that does this is called a "BOOTP forwarding agent". Typically you
have to enable it on the interface to the subnet to be served and have to configure it with the IP
address of the DHCP or BOOTP server. On a Cisco router, the address is known as the "UDP
Helper Address".
The HP J3288A Hub-12 and HP J3289A Hub-24 are compatible with both DHCP and Bootp
servers.

A DHCP server (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)  is a server that automatically assigns IP addresses
to computers and other devices on the network. Without a DHCP server, each device on the network
would need to be manually configured with an IP address. Every device on the network needs an IP
address to access network resources such as the internet, applications and even making phone
calls. With a DHCP server this entire process is automated and can be managed from a
centralized server.
Open Windows Components Wizard. Under Components.
Scroll to and click Networking Services.
Click Details .
Under Subcomponents of Networking Services.
Click Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) & then click OK .
Click Next .
If prompted, type the full path to the Windows Server 2003 distribution files, and then click
Next. Required files are copied to your hard disk
